O, O, O, what could have been!, May 3 2010

I was eagerly anticipating this book, having loved Oprah's inspirational style and all the incredible people she seems to be surrounded by. This would be a book with the very best tidbits of 10 years compilation from Oprah Magazine...so what could possibly be better than that?
Well, the lovely cover makes this appear like a jewel, but inside was actually rather bland. Page after page was filled with single sentences by various important people of our time (and some good old tried & true as well). Without any inside "art" or decorative formulation, it looked a bit more like a textbook than a light, fun read. Perhaps the simplicity was intentional, so as not to take away from the content, but it resulted in something that was actually a little boring.
That said, Oprah certainly knows how to put together great minds, and the contributors were a fantastic group of people. Not all of what they had to say was "inspirational", some was more advice-like, or common sense wisdom. It's also possible, in my opinion, that the book could have been edited a bit further, as this did not feel like just the "best of the best". Rather, it was as if there was a tidbit from every interview and/or article from O Magazine ever written. There were many sentences that really said nothing special or new to me. Maybe that's because I am a subscriber to O, and have simply seen it all before.
This is still a sweet little book, geared primarily toward women & more precisely, adults. I had thought this might be a fabulous graduation gift but I don't feel it has the tone of something appealing to a college grad. However, Oprah followers and those who love her magazine contributors (Suze Orman on finance, for example) and her friends (Maya Angelou, and more of course) will probably enjoy it, though they may have the same experience of deja vu that I have had. I suppose if we are to be experiencing anything more than once, it might as well be something positive.

inspirational quotes to read over time....., Mar 23 2011
By Colleen M. Schneider - Published on Amazon.com
I'm a big Oprah fan and when I saw this little book I thought it would be interesting to see what kind of people she would quote and how this book would turn out. Many of the people quoted have been on her shows (Dr. Phil, Martha Beck, Maya Angelou, etc.) but there are many other quotes from authors, poets, entertainment people and philosophers, as well as Oprah's own words.
The book is entirely quotes, there is no extra anything else, it is just quotes, so it is not the kind of book you sit down and read in an afternoon. It is something you could read before bed, or upon waking or to have on your coffee table.
The quotes are sectioned by type: Dreaming Big, Love sex, friendship & family, Giving thanks/giving back, Joy fun & pleasure, Honoring your Body, Aha moments, Finding balance, Your thoughts & Beliefs, Aging Brilliantly & Reinventing Boldness.
I enjoyed this book and found myself tagging pages to write down in my own little quote book. I also found that Martha Beck's quotes hit home with a punch and a little dab of humor, so I will be seeking out some of her books to see if I enjoy reading her books as well.
Overall, a nicely put together little book and a keeper for those who like uplifting quotes.

One need not be a fan of Oprah's to enjoy this book. The quotes within are entertaining and uplifting. This is a book to read often for pleasure and gleaning great quotes.
