Product Description

From America’s greatest chronicler of life lived at its extremes and the bestselling author of "The Perfect Storm," "War," and "A Death in Belmont" comes a rare work of fiction, an intimate, brutal account of a young American journalist trying to survive his latest assignment.

Daniel wanted to escape the Midwest and its small-town newspapers, but he didn’t sign up for this: a war-torn West African city strung in barbed wire, its embassies abandoned, child soldiers brandishing guns in the streets. Andre, the veteran photographer Daniel is paired with, is conversant in all of it—the jungle, the locals, and especially the attendant risks of covering war—and pushes them to go deeper into the conflict, to get to the front lines. Yet in a battle like this, there are no reliable lines of safety. Western rules do not apply, and atrocity is color-blind. Just when Daniel thinks he’s convinced his fearless partner to retreat, they arrive at what could be the end of the road for both of them.

This powerful short story, at once modern and timeless, combines the best elements of classic war literature and psychological horror. Junger’s unforgettable journey into the heart of darkness confronts man’s unrelenting savagery and his unpredictable capacity for cowardice—and courage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Images of war from the Third World Dec 4 2012

It's been years since I read The Perfect Storm, and I'm glad to see that Sebastian Junger can still crank out compelling fiction. In the story, Daniel's the reporter and Andre's the photographer covering a civil war in an unnamed African country (I believe it's Sierra Leone, but the events in the story could have taken place in any of several countries). They came to cover peace negotiations, but the uneasy accord fell apart as rebel forces attacked, while regular army forces and militias defended the cities. This was war as fought in the Third World - no high technology and smart bombs here, where most units didn't even have radios. Thrust into this situation, Daniel and Andre would be lucky to survive, much less cover the fighting.

The author captured the chaotic, confused fighting, where life was cheap and anyone with an AK-47 or RPG could be your enemy. The terrifying sights, sounds, and smell of death were all around them, and in the end, all the two journalists could hope for was to survive the madness.

The story was presented as a fictional work, but I have no doubt that the events in the story were based on the kind of experiences that real journalists have reported. With only 300 Kindle locations, the story is very short, but it's powerful reading.

This was a horrifying account of the breakdown of peace negotiations in an unnamed African country. This was so well wrirren, so descriptive and compelling, that I couldn't believe it when it just ended abruptly. I would have expected a conclusiopn to such a well thought out story. No Fair!!

A scary look at journalists covering a conflict where life is unimportant to the combatants. Not an edge of your seat page turner, but informative.
