The World of Henry Orient would be a classic, if only more people knew about it. Here are the adventures of two prep-school Manhattan girls, memorably played by Merrie Spaeth and Tippy Walker, who decide to dedicate a brief but crucial moment in their lives to the adoration of one Henry Orient (Peter Sellers). Orient is a concert pianist--with curiously uncertain accent--more renowned for his mistresses than his playing. (Although Sellers is onscreen for less than half the picture, he sketches one of his comic gems.) The movie has a wonderful J.D. Salinger flavor of early-'60s New York privilege, with a keen sense of the secret lives adolescents can construct for themselves. Director George Roy Hill brings an occasional burst of New Wave style but otherwise steers the movie into the tone described by one of the girls: "I feel awfully happy in a sort of sad way." --Robert Horton

Description

Peter Sellers, Paula Prentiss, Angela Lansbury and Tom Bosley are hilarious in The World of Henry Orient, a funny, charming (Los Angeles Times), lively and imaginative (Newsweek) place you'll want to visit again and again! Two starry-eyed schoolgirls spy, stalk and scheme their way into the life of a concert pianist (Sellers) in this wacky piece of inspired lunacy (The Hollywood Reporter). With half of New Yorkincluding a bevy of befuddled cops and one man-hungry momin tow, these precocious teens do all they can to keep tabs on their harried hero, inadvertently turning The World of Henry Orient entirely upside down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Henry and The Kids, Sep 21 2011

For those of you who have only known Peter Sellers as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau, "The World of Henry Orient" shows this talented comic in an entirely different light. Sellers plays a keyboard impressario who looks and talks like a cross between a used car salesman and a phoney foreign gigolo. When he isn't upsetting symphony conductors by missing rehearsals and fumbling at the keyboard,he is hot on the trail of Paula Prentiss with a wary eye out for the lady's husband. Into all of this comes two star-struck pre-teen girls who are always out for fun and adventure. Their adventures bring them into contact with Henry Orient and they begin stalking his every move. On more than one occassion, this causes cold water to be dumped upon the romantic tryst between Mr. Orient and his timid, nervous lady.
For those who can remember the fun and innocence of the films from the early 1960's, this one is a treat. The two girls carry off their parts with total believability and Tom Bosley along with a very nasty Angela Lansbury are on hand as parents.

4.0 out of 5 stars We love you Henry, oh, yes we do..., Aug 30 2008

14-year old gal-pals Val and Gil fantasize about falling in love and talk endlessly about their crushes. The girls are currently obsessed with the dashing concert pianist Henry Orient, so much so that they follow him all over New York City. Mr. Orient finds this quite annoying as he spends most of his time romancing married women.

This movie was popular in 1964, but hasn't aged well. Back then, 14-year olds wore crinoline dresses and ankle socks and grown-ups dressed to the nines. Today, sweet Val and Gil look like they're from another planet and the adults sitting around in pearls and hats do, too. Despite the title, the movie isn't about Peter Sellers' character, Henry Orient; in fact his is a relatively small role and he never really gets a chance to shine or connect with the audience. Merrie Spaeth and Tippy Walker play the girls who cheerfully stalk their idol, and their friendship and relationships with their parents make up the plot. The girls are wholesome and natural. Angela Landsbury is good as Val's cold and creepy mother.

This is a movie made for reminiscing about the good old days; it's a gentle family movie from another era that may leave young people scratching their heads and older people smiling. 3.5 stars.

Lovely 5-star film. Had me laughing aloud many times. But (as has previously been mentioned) the sound quality on this DVD is pathetic. Very hard to hear. One needs to turn volume way up, and maybe use the subtitles too. A great pity.
