Review

"Everyone who reads books treasures Jan Morris.... Beyond the accuracy of her observations and the acuity of her reflections, her writing itself...has been a singular joy to readers."

Product Description

The first book to distill Jan Morris's entire body of work into one volume, "The World" is a magnum opus by the most-celebrated travel writer in the world. To read it is to take an epic armchair journey through the last half of twentieth-century history. A breathtakingly vivid guide to our greatest cosmopolitan cities and cultures from Manhattan to Venice and from Baghdad to Barbados, this book assembles fifty years of Morris's finest travel writing. With eyewitness accounts of such seminal moments as the first successful ascent of Everest, the Eichmann trial, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the handover of Hong Kong, "The World" promises to create an entirely new generation of Jan Morris readers. A "San Francisco Chronicle" Best Book of 2003.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Consummate Travel Writer, May 23 2009

(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: World (Paperback)
This is my first foray into the literary world of Jan Morris, and I have nothing but praise for her writing style and her brilliant insights into life on the grandest of scales. Morris has been around for years as a respected columnist for the Times of London and a popular free-lance writer on international travel. What makes this collection of essays so remarkable is that it covers a wide sweep of Morris's journeys over half a century to places where many of us will never get to. Each of her written memories is loaded with cogent descriptions about the people she met, the natural surroundings she encountered, and the subtle social forces at work on the varied landscapes. Her keen perceptions seem to focus on what is happening under the surface of people's ordinary lives in the most exotic of places. Thus, most of her reflections grapple with understanding the natural and human forces at work in shaping a particular spot over time. To that end, Morris inserts herself into every landscape as a frontline observer who offers a most poignant description of what she feels, sees, and understands. What emerges from her perceptions is a very intelligent and perky discussion about the important political issues that overarch everything else. Some of her many visits include stopovers in the Middle East during the formative 50s, West Africa during the heady days of early independence, Jerusalem during the Eichmann Trial, and life in the capitals of the world. This is a beautiful book written by a sensitive person who has the ability to notice a wide array of detail and make something of it for the benefit of posterity posterity.

I am half-way through Jan's beautiful book of narratives and absolutely loving it. I would reccommend this to anyone with an adventurous spirit and an appreciation for great writing. Jan captures the world in her magnificent prose and makes it look easy.
