4.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad March 29 2006
*Possible Spoilers
Shout! Factory has been the company that released the World Poker Tour on DVD. This special episode, coined "The Bad Boys of Poker", was a special freeroll invitation only episode, featuring Gus Hansen, Antonio Esfandiari, Paul Darden, Phil Laak, David Ulliot and a sweepstakes winner Mark Richards (amateur player). Although part of season 2, it was not included in the season 2 box set release, which only included episodes from the tour, and excluded these special freeroll tournaments. Instead, it was released on a stand alone DVD special.
First let's talk about the episode. Well, the tournament itself is a little slow going, only because it was a freeroll invitation only tournament, and every player had $250,000 in chips. A highlight of the episode was Gus Hansen's amazing "junk hand" call against Antonio Esfandiari, causing him to be eliminated from the tournament. Another highlight was watching amateur Mark Richards play, shaking every time he put a bet in. It was also funny that he made it to the final three. In the end, it was Paul Darden vs Gus Hansen. Paul's stack had decreased signficantly, and was pretty much blinded out. As the episode came to a close, Gus Hansen took home the victory.
About the DVD, it was well made. There were trailers at the beginning of the disc, which is always annoying, but other than that, the picture quality was clear, the sound was clear, and it featured selectable audio commentary by Phil Laak and Antonio Esfandiari. Included as well were "bad boy bios", and "bad boy moments" from previous WPT episodes.
All in all, this DVD is nice to have in your collection, but not 100% necessary. I mean, after all, it is only one episode, and it wasn't even a real tournament.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch and Learn. Aug. 13 2005
By Bernard Chapin - Published on Amazon.com
Right away, when you note that this is a WPT event, the amateur poker player can comprehend that a great deal of instruction will vicariously be offered. This particular final table, however, is a contrived event. Paul Darden, Devilfish, The Magician, Gus Hanson, and Phil Laak were brought in for the purposes of a TV special because they're crowd favorites. The only tournament part of the show did not include the professional. It involved the fans. The winner of the viewer tourney was given a spot at the table. Sadly, the nice kid is left out of the DVD's cover shot. He does pretty well though given the sharks swimming around him. My sole regret is that we don't get to see enough of the Devilfish. As for "The Unabomber" Phil Laak, this guy is absolutely bizarre--at least to me. I cannot explain his behavior. We can only hope that Jennifer Tilly enjoys it. Here we are privileged with a hilarious shot of Hanson glaring at Laak and undoubtedly wondering what planet this fool is from after he repeatedly tries to rub The Great Dane's head. Gus's excellence is fully on display, and, as always, we learn from his brilliance. This DVD is worthwhile, but remember, this is a fictionalized event. They don't even tell us what the pay structure is so I presume that it did not exist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it just for one hand July 6 2005
By Scott W. Stratten - Published on Amazon.com
Although the WPT commentators make me wanna stick a steel pipe in my ear, this DVD is worth it just to see Gus read Antonio on one hand.

Quite enjoyed it
