Book Description

September 1985
In a world pocked with gutted buildings, looted stores and packs of computer-implanted wild dogs, one man senses more than mere devastation in his surroundings. He begins to grasp that the biochip in his own skull enables him to change reality at will--a tantalizing prospect until he realizes he isn't the only one with that ability.

"An intriguing adventure story that has more than a little to say about our ideas of reality. Like his hero, Ellis takes on the whole world in this book."-Connie Willis, winner of both the Hugo and Nebula awards

Had the world come to an end? Gutted buildings , looted stores, streets deserted except for packs of computer -implanted wild dogs. Not another soul around.

Through a haze, memories of the previous reality flashed through Steven's mind. Bits, fragments, disturbing reminders that everything in the world had changed.

Steven knew that he had been through a brain operation. It made sense that he might see the world differently. What made no sense at all was that the world actually was different; somehow the biochips in Steven's skull had given him the ability to change reality at will. Theoreticaly he could bring back his own familiar world just by willing it so. But , as he began to learn, he wasn't the only worldmaker around....

hmm no reviews, well ill be the first then. my friend had me read this book, its his favorite. i enjoyed it, its not too long and it draws you into it. the protagonist is some young guy who has mental powers that he comes to grips with over the course of the book. its like the matrix in that sense. so his power is that he dreams up fantasy worlds and situations, and lo and behold they become reality. in the beginning hes bad at it, and he refines it more and more over time. he has a few romantic flings to keep things interesting. the climax has him dueling with his equal in a showdown. its a pretty thrilling journey up to the climax, as well as the climax itself. its fun to see characters come into their own and realize the extent of their powers, which is a common theme of course but fun nonetheless.

the end was a little abrupt and i didnt care for it too much, but i guess it did provide closure. just not the closure i wanted, but i wont say more. give this book a shot if you have some spare time and are looking for stimulating sci-fi. i dont know how my friend found it but it was a pretty decent recommendation.
