5.0 out of 5 stars For: The Curious, The Student, The Professional Jan 8 2011
By Kristine Sensenig - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I'm currently a massage student figuring out how to first remember, and then integrate, the many techniques coming my way. I received this book for Christmas, and have found it useful for jogging my memory and re-exposing myself to things that may have not stuck the first time through :-) The photos are especially useful for this: sometimes all it takes is an image that I can carry with me! I'm going to therefore use it as a supplemental learning tool the rest of the way through my program -- for the the modalities it covers and that my program includes. There are a few modalities in the book that I won't be learning in my 600-hour program, and it provides an avenue for me to gain exposure to their philosophies and techniques -- so that I can make an informed decision about whether or not I want to pursue them in the future as continuing education.

However, this book would also be an excellent resource for anyone considering massage therapy -- as a profession or a hobby. I'm going to recommend it specifically to those I meet who express interest in attending a massage school. It goes beyond the "I want to learn how to give my partner a decent massage" books, but it is not so advanced that only trained therapists and body-workers can understand it. It's a good way to get acquainted with the breadth of modalities that all fall under the collective title of "massage." And it introduces prospective massage students to important considerations such as draping, body mechanics and contraindications.

Stone's work fills an important niche, in that it is both very accessible (especially with the amazing photographs) and very informative. It therefore can be an important tool for the curious, the student and the professional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly Beautiful Book by Veteran Master Teacher Jan 24 2011
By Kanta Bosniak - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book will inform and engage those who are interested in becoming massage professionals, expanding their professional practice, or simply exploring massage to enrich their lives.

It's one of the prettiest books I've ever seen, a absolute feast for the eyes, as befits a book on an activity that offers sensuous, spiritual bliss! The scrumptious color, pleasing design, and wonderful photos help anchor the clearly stated intructions and background information. It feels as spacious and generous as the gift of touch.

It evokes an immediate sense of relaxation. And like a good perfume, it builds an interesting blend of contrasts. Opulence and grounded simplicity, spice and serenity, all in one world tour of massage techniques and the philosophies that inluence them.

Author Victoria Jordan Stone is an acknowleged leader in the field, as an author, teacher and administrator/co-owner of the prestigious Blue Ridge School of Massage. Her years of experience funnel into the book a wealth of wisdom, practical information, and authoritaive gravitas. Her love of the art and science of massage embues it with soulful beauty. Her continued work as a hand-on practitioner provides it with freshness and authenticity.

I love this book and heartily recommend it for professionals and non-professionals alike, as a gift, a reference, a pleasure map, to dress up the coffee table, and invite lively conversation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gifted Massage Therapist's Gorgeous, Practical Book July 5 2011
By Hawaiitherapist - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am a practicing licensed massage therapist in Hawaii. The first time I opened this book prior to a longtime client's session, I was immediately able to use one of the many wonderful techniques from this beautiful, practical text. What a delight! And reading the book thoroughly later brought me back to the heart of my self and my practice. What a lovely offering to the world of healers the book and its wise and wonderful author are! About 2 decades ago, I was blessed to experience my first of many massages with Victoria Stone in her Virginia practice. I have received - and now as a practicing licensed therapist in Hawaii now give - many massage sessions, and the absolute best therapist I have ever worked with is the author of this amazing book. She is an inspiration to us all, and her book is a reflection of her heart, soul, gifts and wisdom. Detailed, beautifully and artfully infused with useful photographs, the book is a pleasure to read and use. Thank you for the gift you are to our world, Victoria!
