5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent basic guide to wrestling for anyone who is into this great sport. Jun 26 2012
By Joseph J. Truncale - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review
First off, do not be fooled by the title. This book is not for dummies. As someone who has been involved in the martial arts(wrestling, boxing, karate, judo, jujitsu, combatives etc) for more than fifty years, beginning with wrestling at a Chicago Park district, I found this book very interesting and highly informative.

This 360 volume is filled with valuable information on the sport of wrestling. The text is organized into five detailed chapters. Part one explains what the sport of wrestling is all about. The second part covers the importance of developing a solid foundation for wrestling. The third part details the various wrestling moves you need to learn become good at this sport. The fourth chapter is about the coaches and parents who support you in wrestling and the final section breaks down the top ten tips for success in wrestling.

There are numerous photographs showing the basic moves of wrestling; however, like any type of physical combat sport, you cannot learn wrestling from just reading this book. You must seek out a wrestling coach and club to actually become proficient at this sport.

In conclusion, this is a fantastic book when used in conjunction with actual training with a wrestling coach.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Wrestling 101 Book July 26 2012
By Theseus - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review
Ok! First, this book is NOT about professional wrestling. And it is not about Mixed Martial Arts. It is about Wrestling, the classic (and Olympic) sport.

Obviously, this is a beginner's book on the topic. The language is simple and straightforward. This book was created for everybody but seems to be particularly designed for kids who love wrestling (or who want to love the sport of wrestling), parents or guardians of these kids, or anybody who has gone to a wrestling meet and wants to figure out what is going on.

Probably the clearest sections of the book were those that provide you with the rules of wrestling and what goes in the ring. Wrestling's somewhat complicated scoring system is explained with great clarity. Since wrestling is pretty fast, the book does a superb job of explaining the wrestling moves such as take-downs, reversals, escapes, and, of course, pins with excellent step-by-step illustrations.

If you are looking for basic information about equipment such as shoes and headgear, you'll find that in here too.

Finally, the book also addresses the mental aspects of the sport. And let's face it, walking onto the mat to do combat with someone who is about your size is probably as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. This book addresses things such as how to psyche yourself up to face a superb opponent and what sorts of training wrestlers engage in to get their heads ready for the rigors of competition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the book, dislike the name July 2 2012

Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review
As with other books in this series of "Dummies" books, they are written well, have valuable information presented in a simple format and the author's are usually noted experts in the chosen field. I just don't like the name. My 5 year old grandson was all excited when I told him I ordered the book for him to use with his dad and aunt. He told me it wasn't nice, he wasn't a Dummy and the kids would make fun of him.

That being said, the book is great. The first page I flipped open to when the book arrived was, Winning and Losing Gracefully. Right away, I liked the message. My son was a heavy weight wrestler, my daughter is an MMA kick boxer and I study Chinese Kungfu. This book was ordered for my 5 year old grandson, who has been to some of the children's classes at our various gyms. We hope to use it to learn the rules of the sport, teach him some basic practice techniques and to reinforce the notion of fair play and sportsmanship.

I know from experience in using "Feng Shui for Dummies", that some of the teachers I had when getting my 10 year certification in Feng Shui studies, were authors of the Dummy book. Not as well versed in wrestling, I am counting on the Olympic Gold Medalist author to help in getting the next generation off to a good start in the sport of wrestling.
