Book Description

April 1 2002
Graduating from veterinary college in 1965, Jerry Haigh is transported from Scotland to the wilds of Kenya where his first patient is a giraffe with a sore foot. Not having encountered many giraffes in Scotland, he turned to his knowledge of cattle to improvise a treatment and cure the animal. By turns poignant and amusing, this memoir reveals what life was like in post-independence Kenya, a nation just making the transition out of colonialism. While living on the slopes of Mount Kenya, Haigh encounters and treats rhinos, elephants, zebras, and pelicans, as well as cattle, including those of President Jomo Kenyatta. He also meets and marries a Dutch doctor, and they combine their lives and medical skills to help both human and animal patients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jerry Haigh Master Storyteller Oct 12 2009
Format:Paperback
Through his engrossing depiction of Africa (and both its two-footed and four-footed inhabitants), Dr. Jerry Haigh pulls us into a life filled with danger, love, and adventure. What makes this account of a fish-out-of-water different is that Haigh's humanity and sense of humour never flags in the face of many obstacles he faces, both as a vet and as a man. A great read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read from a wildlife vet in Kenya Dec 2 2012
By Quinn Thornton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I grew up reading and loving Elspeth Huxley's tales from Kenya, and also James Herriot's famous books about his life as a veterinarian in Yorkshire, England. As a result, I was fascinated to find this work that melds the two together: a British veterinarian in Kenya. While I didn't find the stories of Dr Haigh's many patients quite as heartwarming and memorable as Herriot's, I did greatly enjoy this book and would recommend it to anyone wishing to learn about Kenya in the 1960s-1970s, and/or the practice of wildlife veterinary medicine. Also, some of the photographs in the color plate section of the book were simply breathtaking.
