Make Your Novel Stand Out from the Crowd!

Noted literary agent and author Donald Maass has done it again! His previous book, Writing the Breakout Novel, offered novelists of all skill levels and genres insider advice on how to make their books rise above the competition and succeed in a crowded marketplace.

Now, building on the success of its predecessor, Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook calls that advice into action! This powerful book presents the patented techniques and writing exercises from Maass's popular writing workshops to offer novelists first-class instruction and practical guidance. You'll learn to develop and strengthen aspects of your prose with sections on:

  • Building plot layers
  • Creating inner conflict
  • Strengthening voice and point of view
  • Discovering and heightening larger-than-life character qualities
  • Strengthening theme
  • And much more!
Maass also carefully dissects examples from real-life breakout novels so you'll lean how to read and analyze fiction like a writer. With authoritative instruction and hands-on workbook exercises, Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook is one of the most accessible novel-writing guides available.

Set your work-in progress apart from the competition and write your own breakout novel today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chuck the rest of my collection if I can keep this book, Jun 22 2004

After attending one of Maass' BN workshops and diligently typing down all the questions he posed us, I preordered this book immediately.

This was everything I hoped it would be and more, even with the "heads-up" I'd gotten from the workshop. I've gone through the first section since receiving my copy and it's already made me rethink my heroes and all the impacts to the plot.

This is a definite keeper and I'll likely have to get another two copies for when I wear this one's spine to nothing.

If I could pass out more stars, this book would get fifteen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Tool, Sep 18 2009

If you are writing a novel, whether it is your first one or your twentieth one, I highly recommend this workbook as a tool to improve your creation dramatically. It has opened my eyes on the ways the most successful authors keep the reader's attention page after page, create fascinating and memorable characters, and weave an intricate plot that is nevertheless rock-solid. The book is full of exercises that sound strange or ridiculous, but are indeed very useful. Even though I have not felt the need to follow some of them verbatim, just thinking about them has helped me to generate many useful ideas. The book is also full of excellent examples from successful novels illustrating each concept. I agree with the author that this book should be read after the earlier book by the same author: Writing the Breakout Novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A technical masterpiece, Jun 18 2010
This review is from: Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook (Paperback)
Carefully ascribed logic along with encouragingly easy exercizes drive home a brilliant premise: the breakout novel needs to be interesting at a world-wobbling level.
