HASH(0xa054dd44) out of 5 stars Finally, a writer who understands! Nov. 9 2010
By Amie Flanagan - Published on
Format: Paperback
Cherie K. Miller has done something that is quite inspirational for us "rookie writers" if you will. As a writer who wants to get published, I have found it difficult to find other writers who are willing to give me advice or direction. Writing conversations is a book that has a quote about writing for every day of the year. These quotes are not shallow or something that you hear all the time and roll your eyes about. These quotes are useful! They inspire you as well as gently guiding you to become a better and more professional writer. They do not go by topic, either, which is even more exciting. One day they can be talking about style the next about characterization. Really, it's just like you were sitting down with the author chosen for that day and you ask them: "What can you tell me today that is the single most important thing that I need to know about?" And there you have the quotation. Do not be confused that this is one of those books that are like the quotes of calendars either. You know what I'm talking about, those calendars for your desk that you look at and you keep tearing the sheets off because you don't like the quote? This book is actually a book that you can sit and read quite easily. I read this book in three days and I started writing a story and I had a question. I went back to Miller's book and found a quote that helped answer my question. This book is really a great resource and I really enjoyed it!

HASH(0xa054dd98) out of 5 stars What great inspiration for an author Feb. 24 2011
By Dr Robert E McGinnis - Published on
Format: Paperback
Holy moly and holy Cow, what a great inspiration this book has been to me, as well as to my daughter and my son in law. We are all writers and have our own books on the market, but to be sure, this book; Writing Conversations has turned us all on with the power of motivation. The selections in this book show the ability of the author to relate to all of us. I found this book so very important that we have it on our reading side table so that we can pick it up each day. A few of the offerings in this book I have read before, but all of the offering are things that are related to my own thoughts and that is where my personal connection comes in. It is great and I wish you all the success in the world.

HASH(0xa07141ec) out of 5 stars A tool all Writers and Aspiring Writers should Have Aug. 9 2012

Do you struggle with writing ? or Do you love writing so much , that you have turned yourself into a writer ? .
As soon as I saw this book and read the synopsis, I knew it was right up my alley as I have a thing for quotes, poems and excerpts . It was a Chicklit Excerpt a day calendar that started me on loving the Chicklit Genre , and a few years ago my Dad wanted a quotes calendar but couldn't find the right one so he asked me to put together a 366 day quotes calendar of all my favourites quote-a-day. I find them so motivating, inspirational , and downright awesomeness.
Writing Conversations ,by Cherie Miller is a collection of 365 paragraphs , one per day on the Art and Craft of Writing. Contributors have included the likes of Ann Brashares , author of the books and films Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and I am Memory which I loved.

For me, starting is hard, so I really need to give myself permission to do a bad job. I always give myself leave to write total nonsense for as long as I need to release the pressure, because it's really hard to start if you feel like that first sentence you write has to actually mean something. So I tell myself that this is the first page of the book but it doesn't need to be used for anything, just for warming up. ... But not every book is meant to be published, and I think that's freeing for writers. Some writing you just do for the sake of writing, whether or not it helps or it hurts.
Ann Brashares, young adult author made famous by writing

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

To the editor of Harlequin Enterprises books "Terri Gavin"

Stephen King, in his novel
Misery, speaks of "finding the hole in the paper and falling through it." That's a great analogy, and one I always think of when I consider an author's task. Try to fall under the spell of what you are creating. Try to understand the fantasy behind the book, what's compelling, what grips the reader. Most importantly, with every new selection, ask yourself, 'What is this author really saying here about life and love?'"
Tara Gavin, editor of Harlequin Enterprises books.

Cherie Miller's book has something different for every single day of the year, they are quotes to help you along the way from authors, writers, professors , editors - people from all areas of the book/writing world. This is one book that I recommend everyone must have sitting on their bookshelf for when they feel the need and desire for a little bit of encouragement along their way in their journey of writing and books.

HASH(0xa071469c) out of 5 stars Extraordinary Collection of Practical and Motivating Advice July 19 2010
By Steve Miller - Published on
Format: Paperback
As a professional writer, I'm forever honing my craft by learning from authors. I love to read biographies of great writers, having just finished A.E. Hotchner's Papa Hemingway. I also devour "how-to" books such as William Zinsser's On Writing Well and Stephen King's On Writing.

Writing Conversations teaches me in a different way. Each day, I can read a passage by a successful author about the craft and reflect on that wisdom as I begin a new day of writing. This practice evokes feelings of waking up each morning to enjoy my coffee with one of my favorite authors, who gives me five minutes of advice and then bids me farewell, saying "Well, that's my tip for the day. I hope you find it helpful in today's writing!"

The passages cover not only the act of writing, but the writing life - including tips on scheduling and marketing. It's truly an extraordinary collection of practical and motivating advice.
