5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect guide for the teen audience Mar 10 2011
Format:Paperback
I eagerly counted down the days until the release of Heather Wright's book 'Writing Fiction: A Hands-On Guide for Teens,' as I'd been looking for a book like this for my daughter for a couple of years. It didn't disappoint. It's a great guide to writing for all ages, as it covers all the important bases: plot, character development, dialogue, revision and more. The language is down-to-earth and easy to read, and the examples are perfect for the teen audience. My 13-year-old daughter could hardly put the book down. In fact, I had to take it away from her when I caught her reading it in bed at midnight.

Heather's Wright's book hits all the marks when it comes to creative writing techniques: character, plot, setting, dialogue, action, and more. The book is easy to read, easy to use and full of examples (good for young readers). It also provides worksheets that can be copied (good for teachers). This would be a fantastic resource for the classroom - or for the kid who's writing on his/her own and needs a bit of motivation, inspiration and guidance. My 15-year-old son has a well-thumbed copy of "Writing Fiction: A hands-on guide for teens" on his desk. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and enjoyable Feb 25 2011
Format:Paperback
Heather Wright's book "Writing Fiction: A Hands-On Guide for Teens" is full of practical advice, fun exercises and step by step instructions to help teens and anyone else to write fiction well.

Wright uses a friendly and approachable tone in the book, and her website has downloads for character sketches and "brain dump" exercises that help to get the story ideas flowing.

Heather offers practical advice on everything from dialogue and setting to approaching visiting writers and writers' groups. Readers are encouraged to journal, to read and to be aware of little details around them which can then add colour and life to their writing.

One of the strongest elements in Wright's book is her suggestions for character development. She suggests completing a character sketch for main characters, including information such as a secret a character has never told anyone else. That kind of attention to detail makes characters come alive.

With her practical advice, relevant examples and hands on approach, teens and everyone else can be successfully writing fiction in no time.
