Let me first clarify that I am writing this review about the book, not the companion workbook, which I do not own. I am an amateur family historian and have spent a decade researching my family. I now have before me a large pile of dates, facts and documents that create the skeleton of a life. I am now ready to sit and write, but what a daunting task it is! I can see a good story in my mountain of data, but have no idea how to actually do it. After much frustration, I stumbled upon this book and am finally finding clarity and direction. I have not read it completely yet, and have jumped around a bit to the areas that interested me most, but it's been helpful thus far and am now working my way through the whole thing from the beginning.

If you are not a professional writer but are looking for guidance on how to turn your mountain of data into a compelling narrative, you will find this book helpful. I hope to upgrade it to five stars after I have read it completely.

I guess I just expected more from this book than what I got. I was hoping for a little more in exercises and direction.
