Tired of sending your valuable knives out for service? Try the WÜSTHOF Ceramic whet stone. With two sides, one can recondition a well used edge with the 400 grit side then fine tune with the 2000 grit side. USE WITH WATER .

Product Description

This two-sided whetstone has both coarse (400 grit) and fine (2000 grit) grains for sharpening and polishing knife edges. Use the coarse side for presharpening and to remove small nicks; use the finer side of the stone for the final polishing of the edge. The stone is suitable for use with either water or oil.
Dimensions: 6"L × 2"W × 1"H
Materials: Ceramic
Product of Germany
Submerge the stone in water for about 5 - 10 minutes. Continue to apply water while sharpening. The stone releases small particles during the sharpening process; this powder in combination with water allows the sharpening. Place the stone on a slip-resistant base like a towel. Start by using the coarser grit of the stone. Move the blade back and forth at an angle of 10° - 15° using gentle pressure. Start at the tip of the blade, continue with the middle section, and finish at the end of the blade. After a while you will notice a small burr at the edge. Now repeat the same process on the other side of the blade. Finally, turn the stone over and repeat the procedure, this time using the finer grit of the stone. In order to remove the remaining burr, pull the blade at an angle over the stone. Now you will have achieved the best sharpness. Rinse the stone and clean off the grinding residue. Clean your knife with hot water.

Got lucky and bought it on sale at 48$, I had been looking for a while so I jumped on it.

Good size stone, good combination of grits for my taste, 400/2000.

My only complaint is that it comes in a wooden box and the cover is not attached to the bottom, quite a few times I would pick it up and end up with just the cover in my hand while catching the stone and bottom part in the other hand and almost dropping it. Someone should rethink the packaging, a hinge and clasp isn't that expensive and no one wants a broken stone.

So now I have the very elegant rubber bands holding the box together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what its supposed to Jun 26 2011

Not much to say, other than you obviously need to leave this on a towel/rag on the counter after soaking in water. The wooden box is not meant to be a proper support for sharpening, but only a container for storage. This whetstone does what its supposed to.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not horrible, but not good either May 11 2004

This is not a high quality ceramic whetstone. The rough side is way too rough and leaves deep scratches in my blades. I'll add the caveat that I am not a professional knife sharpener but i am following the directions and not getting good results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take your time and do it right Dec 13 2012

Our knives started to get so dull that I had a hard time cutting tomatoes. No amount of honing got them back to their original sharpness, so I invested in the whetstone. I read the reviews and someone had said that the rough side of the stone scratched his knives, which could easily happen. But if you take your time and pay attention to the angle of your knife, than you shouldn't have a problem. I even watched some how to videos on YouTube. Now my knives are as sharp as the day I bought them.

I bought this as a present for my husband, who felt his electric knife sharpener was not getting the job done. He loves it, and it works really well. He is already planning to get it for others in his family for Christmas.
