Product Description

From Amazon.com

A wimpy remake of an already anemic movie (the 1947 Rita Hayworth vehicle Down to Earth), this glitzy musical from 1980 improbably stars Olivia Newton-John as a heavenly muse sent here to help open a roller-derby disco. Gene Kelly is mixed up in this well-meaning but goofy effort to fuse nostalgia with late-'70s glitter-ball trendiness, and he looks just plain silly. Directed by Robert Greenwald, the film doesn't even work as decent kitsch. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars A musical-fantasy like no other, Mar 30 2008

I have watched the trailer plus clip for this film on the net, and I had gotten curious. So I'd ordered the film, and after I had watched the WHOLE film I love it! A musical-fantasy like no other; but I am shocked by the negativity towards it.

The film is about a frustrated artist named Sonny who dreams of fame beyond his dead-end job; he hates painting large, display-versions of record albums. Then he met and fell in love with a mysterious girl named Kira, who was really Terpsichore - The muse of dance, a daughter of Zeus & Mnemosyne - The goddess of memory; those were the people whose heavenly voices belong to in the scene where Sonny tries to bring Kira/Terpsichore back with him...I studied Mythology you know. I love a really good musical, they've great songs in them. My favorite musical scenes are "Dancin'" a wonderful blend of the 40s and 80s. And "Don't Walk Away" an animated sequence animated by none other than Don Bluth, and I had listened to that song, I cried...Really! I cried! I haven't cried since like...months ago or so. Well overall an awesome musical to enjoy

I throughly enjoyed this movie when it first came out in the theatre and it was just as good the second time around on DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling, April 10 2008

This review is from: Xanadu (Widescreen) (DVD)
What can I say that could make someone watch this movie? First of all, "Dazzling", "Mesmerizing" and "Fun".

Yes, it was 1980 but I can think of a lot of movies today that are just plain, crappy. For one, I don't think "Chicago" deserved the Oscar for Best Picture.

Xanadu is a fantasy, pure and simple. The songs lift you up and the visuals are enchanting. I have yet to see the DVD but I do have a VHS copy that I will not get rid of.

I saw this movie 3 times upon its initial release. I had just graduated from High School and was infatuated with Olivia Newton-John. She could sing or do no wrong. She did not disappoint.

After reading the more favorable reviews (that outweighed the bad), I will order the DVD. I should have a long time ago. I own every album Olivia ever recorded as well as movies she has co-starred in. Has anyone seen "Sordid Lives"? It's a hoot!

Enjoy this movie. Don't overanalyze it!
