Feeding the Microsoft monopoly., Oct. 13 2006

The "how much fun is this game" rating doesn't really apply for this item, but it still deserves a mediocre bit of praise. The remote is definitely not bad - it's nice being able to control the television and 360 using the same remote - but I found upon purchasing it that I simply do not really use or need it. The only time that I've found it especially practical to use is when watching DVDs on the Xbox 360.
All in all it's not very difficult to use your 360 controller to flip through a DVD menu, so if you have the slightest bit of hesitation in spending the money on this product I would recommend holding off. You're going to have a remote for your television anyway, you're going to need controllers for the games, so unless you're as obsessive compulsive as I am and require everything to operate off the same remote then this probably isn't the product for you.

Great at what it does, Nov. 24 2009

I really, really hate using my controller to control movies. You have no idea. I saw the really affordable price of the media remote and figured "WTF, try it". It really does the core things well.
What I want when I watch a movie (whether streamed over my home network or DVD) is: Volume control. Mute. Skip and FF/RW. Menu. Pause. Play. Stop. Power off.
The controller does all that simply. In fact, it is much simpler to turn off your 360 via the remote than via the controller. MUCH simpler. Plus, it is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH cheaper than the wireless 360 controllers. If you, like me, have small kids who aren't allowed to touch/break your controller(s), then you'll like this better just as I do. They haven't broken it yet, but if they do, I won't be nearly as upset about it.
And seriously, the price? It is awesome. No doubt the least expensive thing for my 360.
A fiddly note, you do have to hit the TV button to make the power button on the remote turn off the TV. The volume and mute aren't like that though, so it's not a terrible inconvenience, but for the next version Microsoft SERIOUSLY should spend the extra 20 cents to put two power buttons on the thing, one for the TV and one for the X-Box. I find I am almost always turn off both at the same time.

Well built, but only controls TV and Xbox360., Oct. 2 2009
The Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote has a solid build quality, and is well laid out and balanced for the most part. It will only control your TV and XBOX (no dvd, sat/cable box, tivo, etc...) so those looking for an all-in-one solution should look elsewhere (Logitech Harmony?)
Switching between TV and Xbox mode is required for powering the TV up/down. Would've liked to see a dedicated button for TV power.
Good value otherwise for those looking for an easy way to access media on the Xbox360.
