IT'S A LONG WAY FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF LIVERPOOL,
By Paul S. Power "Music Reviewer" (Nova Scotia, Canada) - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Y Not (Audio CD)
As far as I am concerned, Richard Starkey Jr. is, was and always will be the coolest member of The Beatles. No matter what George, John or Paul did, it was always Ringo who seemed to be the most approachable with a true sense of wit, charm and relative normality in the mad world of the global mega-stars that was "The Boys from Liverpool". All you had to do was see one episode of "Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends" to know this. After the demise of The Beatles, Ringo went on to release quite a few albums and enjoy a decent career as an actor. With over 20 albums under his belt, this is the first one that also sees him in the role of producer.
The CD starts off with a nice surprise; "Fill In The Blanks" is pure ZZ Top material, thanks to Joe Walsh's Southern rock flared guitar licks, and later on femme fatale Joss Stone helps continue the dirty boogie style on "Who's Your Daddy". One very special thing this disc offers the listener is the closest thing you'll ever have to a Beatles reunion in the form of the song "Walk With You":, with the man the Brits call 'Macca'; this duet with Paul McCartney is wonderful and pure magic. Sir Paul also plays bass on another excellent track, "Peace Dream". Beatles fans-this is as good as it gets. And speaking of Beatles fans, "The Other Side of Liverpool" is Ringo's early life laid out in song and is oral history at it's best. Ringo explains how music was his 'ticket to ride' out of Liverpool. Looking at a few more of the songs, Richard Marx co-wrote and provided backing vocals on "Mystery of the Night" and the album's namesake, "Y Not" is funky and fun, it's very reminiscent of Ringo's music from the 1970's. I find it hard to believe that Ringo Starr will turn 70 this year, and after hearing this album I know that age does indeed improve some things besides wine. Like wine, this CD is intoxicating, but too much of this won't make you hate the morning after. You'll just be reminded of how important Ringo was to The Beatles, and that their musical legacy continues. This is a 'must have' CD.

Ringo's best effort yet?,
By
This review is from: Y Not (Audio CD)
I'm going to see Ringo and the All-Star band this month in concert, so I thought I should "catch up" on his latest efforts.
This album, on first listening, has two or three tunes I immediately liked a lot. I kept it in my car and listened to it quite a few times. Each time I listened to it, I liked it better. The songs that didn't strike me as outstanding on the first few listenings, I now thoroughly enjoy. I thought this album was a outstanding effort by Ringo. His best yet.
