This is an astonishing tour de force from the 19-year old Russian/Israeli genius It is often referred to as "The Munich Recital", by comparison with his "Tokyo Recital" that was recorded 2 years earlier. Unlike the latter, there is no audience, and it seems to be a mere studio performance, but the excitement and the magic are undeniable. What is more, the actual Program is more appealing. I was not looking forward to the 5 Liszt transcriptions of Schubert Lieder with which it begins, as I detest the showy mutilation of great music of which the arrogant Abbe was capable in his transcriptions. But Kissin brings not only the requisite technical power to these works, but also a wonderfully sensitive poetry that I doubt that the vulgar transcriber ever achieved, despite his reputation and prowess at the keyboard. The same qualities make his performance of the Wanderer Fantasy a benchmark interpretation, equaling those of Pollini and Brendel with which I am very familiar. The works by Bach and Gluck are nicely played, but lightweight by comparison. What is astonishing is how this youngster could switch from the poetry and magic of Schubert to the probing metaphysical complexity of Brahms' Fantasies Op 116 and plumb their terrifying depths with the understanding of a Rubenstein or Richter in their prime. As for the Hungarian Rhapsody no 12 by Abbe Liszt ---- it was played with precision and bravura to the point where if it had been a CD, I would have sworn that its performer was none other than the composer, flowing garments and beard and hair and all ------- not a young adolescent just on the threshold of adulthood. Technically, everything about this disc is first rate: sound, camera work, and the clarity of the images. A truly unique and historical document eternalizing a phase in the evolution of one of the great pianists of our time.

HASH(0xa1d98294) out of 5 stars An extraordinary moment April 20 2008

I first bought this performance by Kissin in laser disc format years ago and have been anxiously waiting for a DVD release because I don't use laser disc player anymore. Needless to say I am so pleased that I can watch and listen to this magical performance of some of the most beautiful tunes written for piano by 19 year old Kissin. Without exaggeration, this perferomance by Kissin is a truly special one.

The playing was so refrshingly innocent, tender, cristal clear, technically perfect, and always with beautiful singing lines. I believe no one else can play these repertoires better than Kissin at that age. The video was superb, perfectly catching Kissin's unique playing style and his youthful expression; and the audio recording was excellent. Anyone who loves piano music, or I would say music in general, should watch this DVD at least once. I myself have watched it numerous times so far.

It is hard to find adequate words to express Mr. Kissin's performance on this DVD. Young as he is, the amount of drama, poetry, and emotion which pours out of him is absolutely amazing. I can only say that the Schubert/Liszt and the Brahms, especially, are marvelous. No matter what your level of skill, or familiarity with the music, you will treasure this DVD.

If you love classical piano music, this DVD should be in your collection. Evgeny Kissin as a very young man with amazing technical and emotional skills. Saying I love this performance doesn't begin to express how much I enjoyed this performance and will enjoy for many years to come.
