5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Album Jan. 15 2001
Format:Audio CD
I wasn't quite sure what I was getting when I bought this CD, but I sure am glad I did! The intro drumming is amazing (I like to play that part over and over and over...). The songs move on to show influences from pop, disco, and of course traditional. These songs DO NOT all sound alike! I like the modern feel that is added without taking away from the traditional drum rythms. I would consider this a staple for anyone who is trying to build a collection of Middle Eastern, pop, or World music. (Bellydancers, this is a must for performance and practice!)

I don't mean to insult this CD because it's really catchy and almost every song is good, but I had to give it 4 stars since so many other recent CD's (including Putumayo's Arabic Groove) have been a bit more uniformly strong throughout. It may be my own personal taste -- this CD is a bit more pop sounding and I tend to like the more traditional sounding music. Still, it's great to bounce around to in the car. I love Arabic music and this is a worthy edition to your collection.

Hakim's fun sound has classical Egyptian elements - tabla drums, violin fills, copycat backing vocals - with fast synths and techno underneath. Plus he's a great singer! Some tracks are little more techno than others - El Wala Wala and Habbena pulsate like you're at a dance club. My favorites are the less busy Ansa Azabi, Bashaka, Ezma Yalli...and everything else on the CD. These feel more Hakim's style - upbeat, catchy tunes that get you bouncing around and movin'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice surprise Dec 6 2002
Format:Audio CD
I read the reviews on Amazon.com and thought I was buying a 70's traditional arabic music CD. The kind you would hear at a disco in Beirut or an Amir's tent under a billowing tent watching belly dancers. I did not have such music in my collection. But I was pleasantly surprised. The music is something I would imagine in 2002 at a disco at an international chain hotel in Cairo. I guess I am still looking for a traditional Arabic music CD !

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing May 15 2001

This is such a nice break from what other Egyptian artists are doing. Amr Diab has lost all sense of what is good and the Rai artists are starting to sound alike. I haven't heard anything this refreshing since Khaled's "Sahra" when it was new. Definitely a must buy for anyone interested or already into middle eastern rhythms.
