Product Description

Over 50 million people in America knit. The average knitter spends between $500 and $1,700 a year on yarn, patterns, needles, and books. No longer just a fad or a hobby, knitting has advanced to a lifestyle.

Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter moves beyond instructions and patterns into the purest elements of knitting: obsession, frustration, reflection, and fun. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's humorous and poignant essays find humor in knitting an enormous afghan that requires a whopping 30 balls of wool, having a husband with size 13 feet who loves to wear hand-knit socks, and earns her "yarn harlot" title with her love of any new yarn-she'll quickly drop an old project for the fresh saucy look of a new interesting yarn.

Since the upsurge in knitting began in the early '90s, the number of women under 45 who knit has doubled. Knitting is no longer a hobby for just grandmothers-women and men of all ages are embracing this art. Describing its allure is best left to Stephanie who explains: "It is a well-known fact that knitting is a sparkling form of entertainment, as spiritual as yoga, as relaxing as a massage, and as funny as Erma Bombeck trapped in a PTA meeting."

5.0étoiles sur 5 My intro to the Yarn Harlot, Aoû 13 2007
Par Lulu (Toronto) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This was my introduction to the Yarn Harlot, and I adored it. You don't even have to be a knitter to find it funny, though judging from the review above it helps. SPM is such an excellent writer she makes the most mundane of everyday activities unbelievably funny. OK, so some of it is from her blog, it's a heck of a lot easier to read a nicely packaged book than 5 years of blog entries. I'd buy it again in a flash.

I laughed, I cried, I took up sock knitting. Do I need to say more?

3.0étoiles sur 5 Her blog with a cute cover page, Mars 3 2007
The title could have been " A Copy/paste book of one of my best blog entries". For 240 pages, she talks about her family (boring) and knitting ( some chapters are verrrry funny though) and how much alcool she drinks (yeah, believe me). In some chapters, she acts like a nuts. For example, she knits something in wool for someone who is allergic to wool. She thought that this person was allergic because sometimes that yarn could be scrachy, but no! he was really allergic to wool! And then, she find the softest wool ever and knit something and give it to the guy ... Oh come on Stephanie! And the part where she has too much yarns that she has to stock them everywhere in her house, like behind the washing machine or something ?!?! That kind of writing is not for me. Like I said , some chapters are funny though, like when she wanted to knit a green afghan as a wedding presents but it turn out that she run out of time and the thing wasnt completed and, well, you'll see whats going to happen if you read it...

Well, if you have access to this web page, you have access to her blog. Dont buy that book, go read her.
