This book encourages you to look at yourself each day. I used the book in conjunction with the book An Encounter With a Prophet which worked wonders for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a Healthy Book!, Jan 14 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Year Of Living Consciously (Paperback)
This book is so full of pertinent information in easy to assimilate sizes. It is all about living consciously and taking responsibility for ourself and our growth. It supports my own co-dependent recovery (without mentioning the word.)

There are mini series of processes for problems that offer clear steps toward resolution. Most helpful to me was the 5 step process of expressing feelings that result from another's behavior. It is clear, respectful communication to all involved and so HEALTHY. A MUST for everyone of all ages!

5.0 out of 5 stars Skip the Corkscrew, Buy this Book!, Jan 20 1999

This review is from: Year Of Living Consciously (Paperback)
It was pretty much an accident that I read this book at all. Now I'm recommending it, enthusiastically. I bought it as a last-minute Christmas stocking-stuffer for a friend who has always liked Hendricks' work. Then I flipped it open, as people will do, and found it very compelling -- nicely written, relevant, insightful, and helpful. So I gave my friend a fancy corkscrew instead, and I kept the book. I suppose it could transform one's life, which would make it the world's greatest bargain; for now, I can say that it has enriched and improved mine -- which is still a heck of a good deal, for the price of a fancy corkscrew.

As the title suggests, there's a little lesson regarding conscious living for each day of the year, followed by an activity one can do to more successfully live that way. Nothing too heavy: most days take up less than a small page. Both authors are very good at illuminating the small ways in which we risk being less than our best selves in our everyday lives, and the alternation of the authorial role between Hendricks and his therapist niece provides a broad range of interesting anecdotal examples - male and female, older and younger.

While I would tip my hat to anyone committed enough to adhere to the book's one-lesson-per-day structure, it also works perfectly well, I think, as a grab-bag of reminders and tactics for getting more out of life. Good stuff, well worth owning.
