Product Description

From Amazon.com

Yes never needed a symphony to prove their sonic prowess. Even without keyboardist Rick Wakeman (replaced here by the skillful Tom Brislin), the veteran members (vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, and guitarist Steve Howe) are masters of their prog-rock domain. And yet the addition of the young, photogenic European Festival Orchestra (for this Amsterdam performance in November 2001) offers a glorious expansion of the Yes sound, enhanced and fully integrated to create the Yes equivalent of Phil Spector's famous wall of sound. Three songs are included from 2001's Magnification, but it's the classics--including a spectacular, epic rendition of Relayer's "Gates of Delirium"--that make this the best of several Yes DVDs on the market. A behind-the-scenes documentary is perfunctory, and the video of "Don't Go" (from Magnification) seems redundant, but the option to view alternate visuals is welcomed, and the excellent DTS mix is best enjoyed loud. --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, not perfect, enjoyable, Oct 30 2003

These guys are clearly awesome, but this DVD is only "very good," as opposed to "great!"

The song selection could be better, and the 5.1 seperation is not all it could be. Some DVDs have the ability to transport the viewer to the show and make him/her feel as if he/she's right there in the front row. This is a well-direced video which may have created such effect, but for some stupid logo which kept appearing in the lower left hand corner of the screen. That was a bit of a mood-buster.

All in all, though, most viewers will not be disappointed with this DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, wonderful, fantastic ..., Sep 1 2002

No Yes fan should even think about not owning this.

I saw the show in London on this tour and it was truly awe-inspiring. To have this on DVD is a delight.

Were it not for two minor gripes I would have awarded 5-stars. Firstly, the mix in some places should have brought the orchestra more to the fore. Typically this occurs when Jon Anderson strums his acoustic guitar - hearing the backing would be much more lovely. Secondly and I hope it's not my DVD player, but the annoying animation icon won't switch off at the outset, despite you programming it that way. Accidentally I found the sub-title button does this properly, so there it is.

Otherwise Close to the Edge, Gates of Delirium and Ritual will blow your mind away. The world should be forced to watch and listen, for this is how music should be ...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Performance, July 27 2002
By
TOL (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yes - Symphonic Live (2DVD) (DVD)
I saw this tour in Atlanta, Georgia and was extremely dissapointed in the performance due to the sound quality, timing, etc. Well, I'm happy to report that this DVD has restored my faith in this tour and in the whole symphonic concept. The sound is simply incredible, the camera work is superb, and the animated extras are extremely well-done. And, unlike previous animated sequences on Yes videos, these actually add to the experience of the music by following the emotion of each song. I can bring up several examples, but I do not want to give anything away. I recommend watching the DVD once with the animation turned off, and then once again with it turned on (Yes, this is selectable - adding yet another feather in the cap of this DVD). You will not be dissapointed.

We Yes fans have been lucky enough to be exposed to a LOT of new material in recent years. I have been somewhat concerned, in fact, that some of it would start to become diluted. But, with the release of Symphonic Live, there is no signs of this happening in any way.

Buy this DVD and enjoy every minute of it.
