Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Anti-aging guru Roizen and celebrated heart surgeon Oz combine their popular approaches to patient-centered care in this assessment of how much, or more to the point, how little, readers know about their bodies. After taking the quizzes in the book, readers may feel shocked by their ignorance of basic anatomy and the processes required to maintain physical and mental functioning. Each chapter focuses on a body part or system (heart, brain, digestive, reproductive, etc.) and discusses diseases associated with it; genetic and lifestyle influences on its aging process; and foods, supplements and habits that can prevent or reverse related illnesses. The book has an entertaining feel: friendly elves guide readers through illustrations of the body and cartoons feature alien creatures that enter the body and cause illness. The humor is irreverent (e.g., muscle cells surrounding dead heart tissue "start fighting with each other, like Jerry Springer's guests, instead of supporting each other, like Oprah's" [incidentally, the authors will appear on Oprah in May to promote the book]). Despite a 10-day, 30-recipe food plan and a less-is-more exercise regime, however, readers may have trouble using the information to create a lifestyle that will fulfill the authors' promise of weight loss, disease prevention and longevity. Even the recipes target one specific area of the body and weaken the overall conceptual framework. This lighthearted book will be most useful to those who like their health lessons served with a side of humor. (May 1)

Book Description

Micheal Roizen and Mehmet Oz, two powerhouse doctors in both the medical profession and in the media, have teamed up to write YOU: THE OWNER'S MANUAL - the book you should read BEFORE any other health book. It takes the mystery out of medicine and health by giving you the power to not just know what to do to keep fit, but to understand why and how. Simply put, it's an owner's manual for your body. The book opens with a quiz 'How Well Do You Know Your Body?', which will set the stage for the following chapters, each devoted to an integral part of the body including the heart, brain, lungs, immune system, bones, and sensory organs. Each chapter will contain common myths, which the authors will debunk. They will then give both the hard facts and easy ways to make the body run like a well-oiled machine. The writing style is engaging, and smart; the accompanying black and white illustrations conjure up the details and accuracy of Gray's Anatomy, but with a whimsical twist. This is a health book like no other. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, May 29 2005
Clearly this is an excellent book that everyone should pick up and learn from. We all need to learn more about our bodies than was presented in biology class. I'm not a health nut but I certainly believe in living healthy. I enjoyed this book along with another book called Simple and Simply Delicious by Sylvie Rocher - a health cookbook by a French lady. Both books are excellent and are required reading for anyone interested in living a healthy and delicious life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comment, Dec 6 2006
I found this book very educational and informative. However, the non-stop cultural references and little quips become annoying quite quickly and I find myself skipping over most of the book looking for the "meat". I would also prefer the sketches to be more realistic and call things what they are. What is up with the elves? It really takes away from the enjoyment of reading this book. I still rate it a 4 out of 5 for the info.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poop for Healthier Life!, May 5 2005
I was wondering whether an American author will ever write a book with this kind of content. A book dealing with health and longevity, written in an easy-to-understand language. A book giving a good insight and understanding of how our internal organs work, how they interact and influence each other. A book stating simply THAT WE NEED TO POOP, AND WE NEED TO DO IT NICE AND OFTEN!

I came across such a book written by a Russian doctor Mikhail Tombak. His book, "Can We Live 150 Years? - Your Body Maintenance Handbook", talks about all the aspects of healthy life style, starting from the proper care of the spine, via proper breathing, dieting, and exercising, to keeping toxins out of one's intestines, kidneys, liver, and blood. Mr. Tombak put a lot of emphasis on "autotoxication" resulting from constipation. However, up until now I did not come across any other author tackle this problem. Not until doctors Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen came up with "You: The Owner's Manual". Congratulations!

"You: The Owner's Manual" is a book that everyone should buy and own. It gives you good understanding of your body inner workings. It helps you improve the quality of live; it gives you the ability to live healthier, younger, and better life. Hopefully it will also help you decide to say "good bye" to all the silly fad diets...

This is a health book like no other. Except maybe for "Can We Live 150 Years?". I think they should be sold together as they do support and complement each other.
