Product Description

Despite the piercings and spiky hairdos of Good Charlotte frontmen Joel and Benji Madden, the filth and the fury of punk are not in evidence on The Young and the Hopeless. Rather, Good Charlotte lean toward the sunny power pop favored by the lighter Huntingdon Beach, California, outfits. Nevertheless, with the title track and "The Anthem" ("I'm just a minor threat"), the band appeals directly to high-school outsiders. Relationship problems are delved into in "Wondering" and "Say Anything," and they even find space to explore comic horror with "My Bloody Valentine." So they're not as intense or enraged as the hardcore likes of Black Flag or even Linkin Park. But the undeniably strong melodies this bunch comes up with have plenty of appeal on their own terms. --Dominic Wills

1.0 out of 5 stars I'll Tell You What I Know Sept. 14 2003
Format:Audio CD
Good Charlotte doesn't even deserve 1 star. I first saw a picture of Good Charlotte about a year ago. I thought "Right on!" Thinking that they look like a hardcore band, or something like Rancid. 2 months later I watched a VIDEO ON MTV (first clue something was wrong) of a song that I don't even remember. I almost threw up. What do these people think they're doing? Certainly not playing punk music. Ramones, Rancid, Misfits, Black Flag...that's punk. Blink 182 and Good Charlotte is studio-doctored, corporate-churning, conforming, brutally-pansy, money-making, lame excuse for music period. I can't stand to see a Good Charlotte cd next to a Fugazi cd. There's a band worth your money and your time. FUGAZI. not good charlotte, a bunch of phonies. Anyone that understands that punk was about doing your own thing, not caring what other people thought (even, gasp, the radio, where nobody would ever let their music be played) anit-corporate...all these people, I want you to remove the Good Charlotee, the Blink 182, the Simple Plan cds from the punk section and put them in the pop section where they belong.
Good Charlotte is a joke.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Poseur Punk Crap Ever June 8 2004
By Steph99
Format:Audio CD
This is the worst crap I have ever spent my money on. I'd give this cd -1,000,000,000 stars if i could. This cd makes me want to throw up, listen to it again trying to give it another shot, and throw up some more. You can't get any more wanna-beish or poseurish than this. Song after song is boy band punk poseur crap. I'm not sure who would like this besides half brain morons with no ears. Can't you all see that they're a boy band in disguise, I mean they probably don't even really play the instruments. I'm thirteen and my band can make ten times better music than these guys. If you get this cd, my advice would be to drop it of a ten story building into a flaming pile off dog crap.

1.0 out of 5 stars Some Messed Up Punk Poseur Crap!!! June 8 2004
By David
Format:Audio CD
This is the worst crap I've ever wasted my money on. Song after song is boy band punk poseur crap. If I could I'd give this cd zero stars. If you happen to buy this cd, I'd suggest you'd throw it off a ten story building into a flaming bunch of dog poo, then pee on the remains. I'm twelve years old and my band could make ten times better music than this. No human should go through the torture of listening to one song off this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a song review, not a punk review March 13 2004
Format:Audio CD
Everyone keeps saying These guys aren't punk. Where does it say that when you review you have to complain whether they are punk or not. IF you like music and have an open mind TRY LISTENING TO IT YOU MAY LIKE IT if you don't thats fine but listen to it before you make up your mind. I highly highly highly recommend it. keep an open mind about music don't make up ur mind to listen to it whether its punk or not. Boy are people such poseurs...

1.0 out of 5 stars Hypocritical moron music for the masses. Nov. 3 2003
Format:Audio CD
"Do you really wanna be like them, do you really wanna be another trend"....
....this brilliantly deep lyric (sarcasm, for the stupid) taken from "The Anthem" is about as about as hypocritical as you can get. Guess what people, POP PUNK IS A TREND. And by being "pop-punk" you are "being like them" and participating in "another trend". The rest of the lyrics are about as trite and stupid as can be, and the music requires no talent whatsoever. Why do cd's like these need bad reviews? Because its atrocious how this kind of music is so popular and gets so much praise from people, and talented hardworking artists struggle in the music industry. Make sure to vote "no" if you think this is the "BEST CD EVAR!!1!1!!"

2.0 out of 5 stars two stars for effort... i think Sept. 13 2003
By Karina
Format:Audio CD
For starters, it doesn't matter what you choose to label them...pop, punk, pop-punk, posers, ect. ect. They are music. And like it or not they are trying to convey a message. True, these are not the most articulate musical arrangements ever composed, but i at least give them credit for writing their own songs, as many performers nowadays can't even do that. I guess I could say "punk is dead", but really it is all about a mindset that many "punk followers" (yes even you hardcore kids that listen to "underground punk bands" like the germs, mc5 and agnostic front) can't even begin to comprehend - but I'm not saying i can either. So, in a sense, punk will live on indefinitely, but I really recommend checking out other genres, as well *indie, jazz, classical, experimental and relatively non-sappy emo, to name a few*. so good charlotte are a bunch of sellouts (no one can deny that) and that doesn't necessarily make them bad people, but it certainly doesn't automatically assert that their music is worthwhile, either; however, it doesn't mean that people shouldn't be allowed to listen to them. so to everyone, whether you're here because you hate good charlotte and want to make a mockery of them, or because you love them to pieces and think "GC ROX", just give a thought to all the bands that don't make it that ARE good enough, and all the bands that make it riding on the coat tails of a dying trend...but listen to what you want. I've said my piece.
In reference to this cd I'd say go buy their self-titled cd if you really wanted to pick one, because at least their egos weren't so ridiculously large at that point. Their music style is trite and cheap, to be perfectly honest.
