Product Description

Amazon.ca

Despite the piercings and spiky hairdos of Good Charlotte frontmen Joel and Benji Madden, the filth and the fury of punk are not in evidence on The Young and the Hopeless. Rather, Good Charlotte lean toward the sunny power pop favored by the lighter Huntingdon Beach, California, outfits. Nevertheless, with the title track and "The Anthem" ("I'm just a minor threat"), the band appeals directly to high-school outsiders. Relationship problems are delved into in "Wondering" and "Say Anything," and they even find space to explore comic horror with "My Bloody Valentine." So they're not as intense or enraged as the hardcore likes of Black Flag or even Linkin Park. But the undeniably strong melodies this bunch comes up with have plenty of appeal on their own terms. --Dominic Wills

1.0 out of 5 stars I'll Tell You What I Know Sept. 14 2003
Format:Audio CD
Good Charlotte doesn't even deserve 1 star. I first saw a picture of Good Charlotte about a year ago. I thought "Right on!" Thinking that they look like a hardcore band, or something like Rancid. 2 months later I watched a VIDEO ON MTV (first clue something was wrong) of a song that I don't even remember. I almost threw up. What do these people think they're doing? Certainly not playing punk music. Ramones, Rancid, Misfits, Black Flag...that's punk. Blink 182 and Good Charlotte is studio-doctored, corporate-churning, conforming, brutally-pansy, money-making, lame excuse for music period. I can't stand to see a Good Charlotte cd next to a Fugazi cd. There's a band worth your money and your time. FUGAZI. not good charlotte, a bunch of phonies. Anyone that understands that punk was about doing your own thing, not caring what other people thought (even, gasp, the radio, where nobody would ever let their music be played) anit-corporate...all these people, I want you to remove the Good Charlotee, the Blink 182, the Simple Plan cds from the punk section and put them in the pop section where they belong.
Good Charlotte is a joke.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite good!! July 25 2004
By Anthony
Format:Audio CD
the instrumental opening is pretty cool, sounds like you're entering into this child's bedroom but then this nice punk loud music with melodic choir singing in the background opens this record!
the first track to come off the album is, "The Anthem"
starts off with some refreshing energetic track! this is an anthem! it is a really good effort! the drum and guitar even the vocals remaint pretty strong through out the whole song! this is definetly a concert song! "i don't wanna be you!" a stab in the back to those who wanted them to be someone the band didn't want to be! (10\10)
life styles & the rich and famous --- a nice meaning it is true! some really nice drumming! talks about the celebrities living the easy life, and if they were to try living in the original life that we go through, they wouldn't survive! its a nice heavy track, with some great vocals, not the best song on the album, but it is at least good. shows some talent, but not at their greatest, so i wouldn't go judge them by this awesome song! (8.5\10)
hmm, this next song, "wondering" its good, but just good. kind of predictable, its more mellow, but that's not why its just good. the chorus is a bit bland, but its a track you wanna hear every now and then. (7.5\10) the structure is good, but the song in general is bland. but if you're drunk you don't care!
"the story of my old man" - a real fast song, about the band's father well at least the twin's father anyway.. quite the rude man if you ask me, the band wants to tell the story of their man. its an ok track, i'd give it a 6\10. its listenable, but i often skip it.
"girls and boys" this is probably the music video and song, people will call the band whatever they want to call them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wanna Make A Couple Of Notes July 23 2004
Format:Audio CD
ok so everyone is like: good charlotte rocks or vice versa so here's my 2 cents:
1)to the person who said that good charlotte is high school drop outs...thats a lie. benji and joel madden did graduate from highschool, they just didnt go to college.
2)yes i do like this album good charlotte is one of my fave bands BUT i do agree they are not punk rock, but i am not to say they are not punk. in other words their music may not be punk but how could any of us say they are or not punk? we never even met them. so their music is not punk, but we cant say whether their lifestyle is punk.
3)GC actually has some punk cred. they played warped tour many times, they have the guys from rancid supporting them, and you cant deny the dont look punk. but then again this may mean nothing. either way the still have punk cred with them.
4)They wrote MOST of the songs on the record with no outside help...i think the anthem and new beggining were the only songs that had their producers help. so they did create those catchy songs and they havent really been molded and what not. i guess you could say they were partially molded.
well this is just my opinion...if u dont like it fine i dont care

4.0 out of 5 stars Good CD July 19 2004

Hmm interesting reviews here. Personally I didnt like these guys until I saw them live- somebody said it best- they sound way better live than they do on the records, mainly because they mess with the sound and pro-tools too much, I like the more raw sound better. antiradioandmtv, you have some great points, but I along with alot of others I'm sure dont care if Good Charlotte are posers. Yes, I do know their posers and I know people will think I'm a "poser" for listening to them, I could care less- labels are just a wimpy way of people attacking others or defending themselves. I just think their music has a great sound to it- its energetic, infectious, melodic, and explosive all at the same time. So yeah, I think this is a great CD, the only flaws I can see is some of the production sucks (like I said, they shouldn't mess with the pro-tools as much as they do) and that I HATE when Benji and Joel sing at the same time- when just one is singing they sound great. Oh, and for people who think GC isn't "real rock", well, I listen to Led Zeppelin, Guns N Roses, and Aerosmith but I still think GC are rock...
