I have read this book many times..first when I was 23 years old and living on the West coast of Scotland as young wanderer..then in England when I had children of my own..then later in Pennsylvania to my older daughter.. and again here in Nova Scotia as a 60 year old...It is at once enchanting, full of mirth,.wisdom and wit...profoundly moving at times. The dialogue is lively and the characters full of both warmth and light...It is the tale of a relationship between an 8 year old boy and an old man..a tale of the land and a river. It is at once deeply human and spiritual...the writing is stunning and engaging..and what's better is that there is a sequel, "The Green Isle of the Great Deep"...where the climax of Young Art and Old Hector undergoes a transformation and enters the world on the other side. I can't recommend this enough.
