Book Description

Nov 21 2010 0807751537 978-0807751534 Second Edition

This bestselling book has been completely updated and expanded to help teachers use the project approach in child care centers, in preschools, and in kindergarten, 1st grade, and early childhood special education classrooms. For those new to using projects, the book introduces the approach and provides step-by-step guidance for conducting meaningful projects. Experienced teachers will find the teacher interviews, children's work, photographs (including full colour), and teacher journal entries used to document the project process in actual classrooms very useful.

This popular, easy-to-use resource has been expanded to include these new features: explicit instructions and examples for incorporating standards into the topic selection and planning process; a variety of nature experiences, with examples that show how project work is an excellent way to connect children to the natural world; an update of the use of technology for both documentation and investigations, including use of the Web as well as and video and digital cameras; and more toddler projects that reflect our increased knowledge from recent mind/brain research about toddler understanding and learning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love this book Mar 2 2007
By Holly4Tulo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I used it in teaching an Early Chilhood Methods and Materials Class. Helm does a really great job of explaining the child-directed nature of the Project Approach. She shows how to make the process come alive inside as well as outside of the classroom. I would recommend this to instructors as a text for students in an Early Chilhood Curricula or a Methods and Materials class. Students really got to experience how the Project Approach in teaching helps young children choose the trajectory of what they want to learn. Children can take their learning to creative places, of which early chilhood teachers might not even dream!

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful suggestions but horrible editing April 14 2011
By Ally Shea - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is filled with wonderful ideas for early childhood educators all the way through 1st grade teachers. I am now a kindergarten teacher and will be using the suggested strategies in my own classroom this coming fall. My only complaint, and the reason that I rated it a 3 is because the editing is horrible. I do not mean only one or two typos, I mean one or two per page. It took me longer to get through this text than it should have because I was so distracted by the constant errors. As this is their 2nd edition, they should have hammered out the kinks by now. Sadly, if I were a college professor teaching a course on the project approach, I would not use this book solely because of its mechanical errors. Ladies, if you need a new editor, please call me! Prior to teaching, editing was my passion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Young Investigators a step by step guide--a MUST have Jan 9 2012
By Cece - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Young Investigators: The Project Approach in the Early Years (Early Childhood Education Series) (Early Childhood Education (Teacher's College Pr)) I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who works with/teaches children from infants to 3rd grade! This book really lays out clearly how to implement the Project Approach in language that even teachers who have had no experience with the Reggio or Emergent Curriculum approach to learning/teaching can easily comprehend. A definite MUST HAVE it has excellent step by step guidance as well as simple check lists, graphs and forms in the back of the book to help visualize & organize what one must and in the order it should be done to get great results. The most recent version is the best one as it is a bit clearer and has more examples/samples to learn from. I read both.
