As a primary care physician practicing in a small town, I am always looking for resources that help patients understand how their diet and exercise habits impact their overall health. Recently, I had a chance to review Younger Next Decade by Dr. Barbara Ebel.

In her book, Dr. Ebel focuses on lifestyle changes that can make a big difference in thwarting the effects of aging. Much of her material focuses on how age alters our bodies, with an emphasis on life after fifty. She does a good job of communicating medical information in layman’s terms, and she makes good points about why people should abandon unhealthy habits before they cause irreversible harm.

Her chapters focus not only on aspects of physical health, like diet, exercise, and the dangers of smoking, but also on the importance of mental and spiritual health. At the end of each chapter, she makes practical suggestions on how one can make simple adjustments to start down the path of healthier living. Her tone is cheerful and encouraging – sort of like a motivational speaker – and mostly avoids finger wagging.

I believe the book is a good resource for a person who is nearing that fiftieth birthday and wondering how to start a healthier living plan. As Dr. Ebel points out, taking care of both the physical and spiritual components of our health are necessary to make life after fifty more enjoyable.

About the Author

Barbara Ebel is a physician and writer. She attended University of Louisville medical school, University of Louisville residency training, and practiced in Louisville and Florida as a board-certified anesthesiologist. She doesn't presently practice anesthesia, but has used her primary care skills as a clinic volunteer physician and on a medical mission. She is a medical guest lecturer on topics ranging from physician suicide to Malignant Hyperthermia. Dr. Ebel sprinkles credible medicine into the background of her novels and her operating room scenes shine, but her characters and plots take center stage. She has also written and illustrated a children's book series called Chester the Chesapeake about her therapy dog. As an author, she is situated in the right spot for writing, nestled into a wildlife corridor in middle Tennessee with her husband and pets. She has lived up and down the East Coast and always enjoys being close to the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico, or lakes and rivers. Full of down-to-earth advice and sensible explanations of the medical reasons behind the body's slow disintegration, Dr. Ebel has penned a practical guide to improving our health as we fight the aging process. She makes no-nonsense recommendations and suggestions the average person can easily follow without hiring a personal trainer, dietician, or life coach. No magic formulas here, just a good common sense approach to living a healthier lifestyle.

Dr. Ebel has a knack for interpreting the medical jargon so it's easily understood. A quick and easy read, and not just for middle-age women. If younger people followed her counsel, youth might last a whole lot longer. Thanks Doc!

Finding this book while lurking in a writers Amazon Discussion group, the title bore witness to my middle age concerns about aging, and while not quite feeling my mortality, I was feeling my thickening body and the crow's feet around my eyes. Ego and vanity had arrived in my left frontal lobe, making a landing in my mirror, haunting me. I squinted my eyes, but it didn't help. I tried new makeup and clothing styles and that didn't help either. I didn't stop buying clothes in my beloved size 8, promising to use those clothes as a proposition I could make with fattening foods.

I liked the title, so I bought Dr. Barbara's book, Younger Next Decade, hoping for some magical simple age undoing advice.

Thanks to Dr. Barbara, I know what telomeres are. And the analogy she used to teach it to me was perfect for a right brainer like me who sees what she is hearing or reading. While I was reading the first pages I began to get some hope that there might be a secret,easy magic way to undo my aging self, and make it young again.

Telomeres plays a part in aging she tells us and she tells it without making you rush to the dictionary of science. Her tell on the specifics of aging includes a logical promise that the future holds the answer to the actual undoing of the appearance of old age written on our bodies.

As any good doctor will, she gave me a new mantra. "Don't eat anything passed through a window and don't eat anything that wasn't available a hundred years ago." That was after she detailed the reasons why we age so fast after age 30, and I knew that her quote borrowed from Albert Einstein was true. "If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is not hope for it." The absurd idea is that researchers will one day find a way to bring youth back to your body. But for now Dr. Barbara Ebel shows us how we can do it ourselves, with food, without cigarettes, with spirit, mirth, intelligence, and a litany of other ways; mostly by caring for ourselves in this world of tainted foods, evironmentaly infused dangers and gluten saturated fast food purchased in a hurry by working mothers at drive thru windows. Entertaining and educational read.

Dr. Barbara never ceases to amaze me with her wonderful style of writing and versatility. It does not matter if it is one of her great novels or this latest Younger Next Decade. Her writing style is always informative and easy to read. She writes from her years of experience as a doctor but with the finesse of a caring and compassionate women that loves life and eager to share her success. She provides technical and practical information that is always easy to understand. And this latest is great for anyone from Thirty Plus.

I am past my fifties of Transitional years that she speaks of, but there was so much great information for me to use to improve my own life. It gave insightful ways of learning things I can do do help myself live longer and enjoy whatever stage of life I am in. It is a combination of practical advice, along with the medical basics to explain why we need to be making changes as we get older. But the changes are not intimidating or difficult to make. Just knowing the reason in medical terms helped me understand more and what changes I can make to improve the quality of my life.

Dr. Barbara writes with a vast personal knowledge and she lives her life true to form. She is a very intelligent and an extremely wise woman. We can all benefit from this wonderful, and informative book. It flows beautifully and never boring. No matter what stage of life we are in, we can all use improvements and Dr. Barbara not only explains what needs improving but how to it without, feeling overwhelmed. She provides us with simple and practical things we can do. And with Dr. Barbara's medical background she is able to explain the aging process in terms that allow us to see why preventive maintenance is necessary if we want to slow down the aging process. And not only live longer but have a good quality and productive life. The good news is, it is never to late to make positive changes in our life. She provides ways to improve the quality life, as well as, living a longer healthier life. It just makes you more aware of changes that will improve life that are easy and necessary if we want a longer and more productive life. It is the first book of this kind I have ever read and how to use preventive maintenance earlier in life to prepare for the later years. And I enjoyed reading it from this new perspective.

It has given me the motivation and insight to improve on what I can to enjoy the quality life we all hope for. It it is more about life enhancement, with great suggestions on why and how to improve whatever stage we may be in. You will feel refreshed rather than feeling guilty, as many of the self help books have done to me. It is a book of encouragement and hope and one that I truly recommend for all adults. The sooner we realize what is going on with our bodies and the earlier we can work to improve the quality, the easier our "Transitional Years" will be. So, it is a Must Read for everyone and I am sure you will be glad you read it.

Thanks, Dr. Barbara for another outstanding book that is truly a winner. Your talent as a writer is just as great as your mastery of the human body and your success as a great doctor. But, your love of your fellow man and always helping others, is the reason everything you do is a success. I am anxious to see what you will write next, and as always, I enjoy anything you write.
