Pineapple Express, the first film to team James Franco with Danny McBride and director David Gordon Green, featured a loose-limbed, improv-rich approach to storytelling that hovered on the edge of self-indulgence. The medieval spoof Your Highness offers up more of the same shambling, hazy likability, only more so. Although undeniably hilarious at times, it often feels like the feature-length equivalent of Burt Reynolds slapping Dom DeLuise during the end credits of Cannonball Run. Beginning with an admirably tasteless gallows gag, the story follows a drunken, craven lout (McBride, who also scripted with his Eastbound & Down cohort Ben Best) who teams up with his more heroic, destined-to-be-king older brother (Franco) to rescue a damsel fair (Zooey Deschanel) from an unprintable fate by an evil sorcerer (a very funny Justin Theroux). Along the way, they stumble across a love-struck Minotaur, a village of bloodthirsty women, and a beautiful ninja type sworn to vengeance (Natalie Portman). Promisingly, instead of focusing on tired Lord of the Rings riffs, McBride and Co. here set their sights on such prime slabs of '80s Velveeta as Deathstalker and Yor, films that were only one application of bronzer away from outright parody themselves. Unfortunately, for every inspired bit, such as a gloriously wrong encounter with a sage Muppet, there are maybe three instances where the joke simply involves mixing up the King's English with modern-day profanities. (Which, admittedly, can sometimes be hilarious too.) Fans of the cast and crew's previous efforts should definitely check it out, but there's the lingering sense that the movie is probably only a quarter as much fun to watch as it was to make. Forsooth. --Andrew Wright

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly better than expected, Sep 12 2011

Watched Your Highness last night and I was surprised that it was as funny as it was. It wasn't a great movie -- it suffers from the same problem that most comedies today suffer from, which was lack of characters that you care about -- but it was funnier than I expected.

One thing I was surprised about was that there was surprisingly little "pot" comedy. I figured by the title and the people behind it that this would be another Pineapple Express. It was and it wasn't. It bends and blends genres like Pineapple Express, albeit not as successfully. It didn't have a lot of "pot" comedy though.

Danny McBride stars, James Franco is his heroic older brother, and Natalie Portman is on a quest. They combine forces to defeat the evil wizard and rescue Zooey Dechanel. The plot was stolen large from Clash of the Titans, in an obvious way (mechanical birds, anyone?) but it wasn't as successful an homage to the past as a movie like Paul is. There were also obvious references to Star Wars and Lord of the Rings (some shots are identical).

Without the homages, Your Highness wouldn't work as well. However it did manage to pull these threads together into a watchable movie that has humourous moments. And, much like Pineapple Express, when the action parts happen, the movie morphs into a serious action movie. There was a chase scene and a couple battle scenes that were just as fast paced and exciting as any in an action movie.

I didn't mind Your Highness at all; in fact I think I might watch it again.

3 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, Dec 15 2011

This review is from: Your Highness (DVD)
I'm shocked to read some of the other reviews. I watched this film yesterday and I thought it was dreadful. I like all three lead actors, and I really wanted to like it, but I barely was able to sit through this movie. Just all around dumb, and not good dumb, bad dumb, stupid dumb. Anyway, film is subjective, so you may like it. I just didn't find anything about it that was redeeming at all. I'm annoyed that I bought this movie.

With regards to the extras, there are a number of features. I really only watched the gag reel. Frankly, even that bored me.

This is the movie you've probably always wanted to see but you just didn't know it. It's just funny from start to finish.
