Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-A sensitive combination of medical information and personal accounts. Written directly to teenagers by two experienced health educators, the book serves as a guide to the physical and emotional realities of pregnancy and parenthood. Topics covered include testing, fetal development, nutrition, adoption, labor, and newborn parenting. Peppered throughout the text are frank quotes from teen parents that present an honest view of what lies ahead. A chapter for teen fathers addresses their rights and responsibilities, the importance of supporting prenatal care, and the emotional changes they might be experiencing. Each chapter ends with a suggestion for further reading, and an extensive bibliography is included. Average-quality black-and-white photos show teen families of various backgrounds. This is a useful, nonjudgmental tool for readers who are pregnant, thinking about parenthood, or interested in supporting a pregnant friend.

Product Description

This book is suitable for ages 12 to 20 years. Sharing experiences and insights that will help other teens face the realities of impending parenthood, pregnant and parenting teens offer young expectant mothers advice for carrying and delivering a healthy baby. Medical concerns such as foetal development, nutrition, and risks related to smoking, alcohol, and drugs are discussed, and labour and delivery are described in detail - often through the words of teenagers who have already delivered. Focusing on the needs of the young mother and those of her partner, this guide also stresses the importance of staying in school, graduating, and gaining job skills. Including numerous quotes from teenage fathers, but sensitive to the fact that many pregnant teens do not have a positive relationship with their baby's father, this book provides knowledge that will improve a young mother's chances of having a satisfying experience with or without a partner's assistance.
