3.0 out of 5 stars Insightful lyrical content June 28 2004
Format:Audio CD
The lyrics of YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE are what really caught my attention on good old MTV. Both hilarious yet serious all within its short span, Maria sings about her lover, who she knows is all too great. The thing is, he hasn't figured it out yet.
I hope you can forgive me for that time
When I put my hand between your legs
And said it was small
Cuz it's really not at all
I guess there's just a part of me that likes to bring you down
Just to keep you around
Cuz the day you realize how amazing you are
You're gonna leave me
The thing is, her singing isn't the best. I don't strictly show devotion to those who can belt it out like Christina and Beyonce. Norah Jones has a mellower, more soothing voice. But throughout YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE, Maria basically speaks rather than sings, for the most part. I heard that this is the style of Norwegian pop you'll find back where she lives - she's a native who has learned to speak okay English, judging by her MTV YOU HEAR IT FIRST interview.
I'd call Maria a cross between Bob Dylan and Alanis Morisette - an interesting combination. Her lyrics are humorous, often insightful, making this beat indeed a catchy one. This first effort is both short and sweet, plus it illustrates an all too common fear in many of today's relationships.

For $3.99 + tax I got this single. It contains two trackes. The first track is "You're The Only One," which is a fantasic song that can get stuck in your head for so long!! You've probably heared this song on the radio A LOT! This is a huge smash!!!!! The second track is called "Patience", which is over a minute longer, its 3 minutes and 49 seconds. It takes a while for you to get really attached to it, but it is addictive!! This girl is really talented, and you should pick this single up!!!!! God bless yas & I'll pray us, but pray for me & my family & friends too!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s.-ALL YOU PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T LIKE THIS REVIEW, YOU PROBABLY DON'T LIKE IT CAUSE I SAID SOMETHING NICE & GOD-LOVING.....SO YOU MUST BE PAGEONS & REALLY BAD SINNERS.....WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY KNOWN THAT YOU MUST LISTEN YOU UNTALENTED F**K UPS britney spears & hilary duff. THEY ARE SATENS, & I'M SURE YOU ARE WHO DISAGREE WITH THIS!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop whining, please. June 24 2004
Format:Audio CD
Alot of people seem to be seething about how Maria doesn't "sing" or that her singing sucks. Her native language is NOT English, and her native language is very nasal and bronchial intensive. She does sing, just not in the overdone style like Britney Spears or the rest. She belts out every word meaning what she is singing, the songs are very heartfelt, and her attitude is one to match them. As far her not really "singing" and just "talking" the words, this is nothing new if you're into music at all. Alot of artists omit singing, or even music for that part. Bobby McFerrin's "Don't worry, be happy." had ONE instrument, and that was a bongo, the rest was some cheesy lyrics and some whistling, along with a slapstick video starring Robin Williams, but that was still more than enough to create a hit single. Maria Mena is a talented artist, she just doesn't get the credit she deserves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Teenage untamed freshness June 23 2004
By majorka
Format:Audio CD
Marian Mena has been given some unique chances to appear on American television since she was launched in the US. She had several hits in Norway with her debut album, which will be available in the US on the new album.
This is light pop written by a young person - it's not Britney (thank god), it doesn't have the toughness of Avril Lavigne, or the sometimes slightly pompous feel of Mariah Carey's type of soul. It's simple pop with a touch of soul in Maria's small but expressive voice, and fresh personal lyrics about everyday events that are easy to identify with. It's well done, and so far she hasn't fallen into the over-styled trap - hope she doesn't catch it either now she's had her big launch.
Try this for a change and keep your ears open!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stop judging her on one song! June 24 2004
By Amanda
Format:Audio CD
I must admit that this may have not been the greatest single for Maria to pick because on her FULL LENGTH ALBUM nothing sounds anywhere near this and she sings throughout the other songs. On her official site you can preview the album and so far the album is wonderful. Why are you judging her voice when it's just the ONE song you do not like. Wait until her cd comes out and then you'll have something to back you up.
I recommend this if your into stuff that doesn't sound like everyother new artist to come out or more recently every other "new" band because, Maria tends to keep her style very unique and writes lyrics that have meaning. I'm sure somehow we could all relate to the meaning of this song even if you don't like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a style! June 28 2004
Format:Audio CD
I have to admit that when I first heard Maria Mena's song "You're the Only One" I was skeptical about her style, and her lyrics. But I found myself humming the tune, and soon buying the song off of iTunes. It's an interesting song, and is almost telling you a story. If you listen to the words, you realize how well Maria relates to young love. It may be more for the teenage ears, but even adults need to remember what love felt like in their youth. The chorus is one that will stay in your head, and soon you will find yourself singing the words, "You're the only one who drags me kicking and screaming through fast dreams."
