When I first played Pandemic I was enthralled by the level of intensity in this co-operative board game. We felt like there was so much at stake in the game, we were constantly on the edge of losing control and really had to work together and communicate well to win. Also, winning can be difficult in this board game, which adds to the interest and 'addiction factor', at least at first.

This is one board game where I would *absolutely* recommend the expansion, 'On The Brink'. The game does get a little stale without it, but the expansion provides another level of difficulty and unpredictability.

One thing to watch out for in this game is an overly-dominating personality in one of your fellow players. The only bad games I've ever had are those where one person is just telling everyone else what to do - this sucks all the co-operation and fun out of the game quickly. Play with a good group and you will love Pandemic.

I like the expansion, the new rules are great the only issue is that there is a major printing difference between the first addition of this games and that should be noted. So i can tell when certian card come up but there are good and bad card added so that is still fun.

This game is so addictive, I dream about it and it's educational to. The younger ones have a more geographic idea of where countries I wouldn't normally pay attention to are situated in the world. We totally love the option to create roles. One can not predict the outcome of the game no matter how many times it's played. Absolutely love it! And the delivery was very speedy.

Great expansion to a great game! July 5 2013

I just received my copy of the expansion today and promptly tried it out. The first thing to notice is the quality of the box itself. If you own the 2nd edition of the base game already, you'll know what I mean when I say that the box is of a much higher quality than most other board games. Inside is everything listed in the description, but there are now designated spaces for all of the petri dishes, pawns, research stations, cards, and the various wooden tokens used in the game. It also has extra spaces for what I can only imagine will be coming in the second expansion, In the Lab, due out in August. This is a quality product from Z-Man Games.

The game itself... if it wasn't addicting enough already, the expansion allows so much variation to prolong the fun. My sister and I have played the game to the point where it was almost impossible to lose on normal, and we were able to vastly tilt the odds in our favor for heroic difficulty. Now our strategy doesn't work as nicely, and there are so many more factors to take into consideration. Further, there is now a legendary difficulty for an almost impossible challenge (challenge accepted).

Overall, I am very pleased with this expansion, and I look forward to what is coming with In the Lab!

Great game - but watch for price gouging Sept. 18 2013

This is a great expansion for Pandemic -- I like it much better than the newer In The Lab expansion personally. If you like the base game, you'll love the expansion.

BUT, watch out for price gouging here. Currently, both sellers are at $80 or more -- give me a (bleep'ing) break! I don't know what they are smoking, but that is highway robbery. Search elsewhere for reasonable pricing. (MSRP Is about $30 or $35 I think, and there's lots of other retailers online).

Must own for Pandemic fans! Aug. 9 2013

Pandemic is my favorite game!

"On the Brink" is not a stand-alone game it is an expansion on the board game "Pandemic". You will need to already own the game "Pandemic" in order to play this.

I won't bore you with about the theme or how to play Pandemic. You probably already own the original game anyway. However, if you want to see it in action, check out Wil Wheaton's YouTube show TableTop:

[...]

This version is the 2nd edition of "On the brink", which is a much prettier version with an easier to understand rulebook and A LOT of bonus cards. I do not recommend buying the older version. (Why would you??!!?)

In "On the Brink" you get three new ways to spice up "Pandemic". The first is the Mutation variant. This will brings a fifth disease into the game and adds "Mutation Event" cards to both the player deck & the infection deck that will be used along with the standard epidemic cards. It's a nice change and curing the fifth disease is a bit trickier than the rest.

The second variant is the Virulent Strain. Basically, you'll replace the standard green epidemic cards with the red epidemic cards. Now, each time an epidemic card is drawn, you'll infect like normal, but an ongoing effect will occur for whichever disease is currently the most prevalent on the board. (This is my favorite way to play. The ongoing effects really intensify the game.)

The third variant is the Bioterrorist. This allows a 5th player to play the game. This is the role everyone wants to play whenever I mention I have this expansion. The Bioterrorist is a bit complicated to play & explain. The short version is that he is a walking "Mutation Event / 5th disease". (As described above) The Bioterrorist moves around the board in secret placing the 5th disease wherever it can. You will rarely see the Bioterrorist's game piece on the board. That player tracks his movements & etc... on a piece of paper. The person who is the Bioterrorist has to be on the Honor System when they play. I could go into more detail, but suffice it to say that as cool as the idea sounds it is the weakest part of this expansion. It is overly complicated and the person playing the Bioterrorist role needs to be someone who can focus and not lose track of what is going on. I still like this variant, but play it the least.

Overall, this is a MUST OWN if you like "Pandemic". Also, the box is high quality and the insert is able to hold every game piece from both "Pandemic" & "On the Brink". They've even made space for the upcoming third expansion "In the Lab".

BTW - You do get the cool petri dishes to hold the disease cubes and the dishes have a spot on the label where you can name the diseases yourself.

Bio-terrorist destroys families. Jan. 14 2014

My wife received this expansion for Christmas, and I have to say, it is my personal favorite. The two expansions each offer 3 new variations of play. We chose to try the bio-terrorist last. It was my brother who chose to be our 'terrrist' first. By the end of the game, feelings were hurt, tears were shed, and people went home mad. The game became so intense because of the cat and mouse of chasing the terrorist that we didn't hear the phone ring or the 3 knocks on the door. This expansion enables a world of options, and the new characters introduce such amazing variation, I say if you have Pandemic, this expansion is a must.

Necessary expansion Nov. 22 2013

My friends and I loved playing Pandemic. I decided I had to get the expansion for the cool petri dishes it comes with and the added cards.

The virulent strain challenge:
It's fun. It is probably the easier of the three challenges the game comes with. It essentially replaces the epidemic cards with cards with added or continuing effects on one color disease, so it makes it annoying to treat and cure.

Mutation challenge:
Purple disease cube and can be played with the virulent strain. I enjoyed this one. I thought it would be very hard but if you play with 4 virulent strain epidemic cards it is just beatable. What is nice about it is that it is easy to cure but is difficult to eradicate, plus there are only 12 disease cubes of the purple.

Bioterrorist challenge:
Good, but not my favorite challenge. Essentially you act as the five disease similar to the mutation challenge. It was really fun to sabotage the other players by removing research stations from the board. However, it was really limiting only having two actions, but maybe that's the point.

If you love pandemic, definitely get this expansion. It allows a lot of options how to play the game.
