Book Description

April 1 2008
In the early twentieth century Zaida Ben-Yusuf (1869–1933) was one of the busiest photographers in New York City, maintaining a fashionable studio on Fifth Avenue, exhibiting her distinctly modern portraits across America, Europe and Russia, and publishing work in many magazines. Her self-portraits also challenged traditional perceptions of female identity. This striking book celebrates Ben-Yusuf ’s achievement, showcasing a significant selection of her elegant and compelling portraits featuring prominent artistic and political figures of the day, including Lincoln Steffens, Edith Wharton, Elsie de Wolfe and Robert Henri. An interesting glimpse into the world of photographer Zaida Ben-Yusuf, who was working in New York at the turn of the 20th Century. Although she only worked in NY as a photographer for about 10 years, she managed to be listed in the Ladies' Home Journal of Nov. 1901, as one of the foremost women photographers in America. This book offers a biography of her, along with dozens of her photographs of the artistic and literary who's-who in NY at the time. The pictures, many of them full page, are in black/white or sepia tones. Included, along side the photos of artists, authors and actresses, there is a unique picture of Theodore Roosevelt, one of aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, and another of violinist Olive Mead.

I bought this book for the photographs, but I got caught up in reading the short biography that accompanies each photo. This was fascinating. In fact, I went on to purchase additional biographies on a couple of the subjects - one of which was the Buddhist scholar, Ekai Kawaguchi. I suppose I would recommend this book to any lover of art & photography; anyone interested in this period of time in NY; and anyone wanting to know more about Zaida Ben-Yusuf in particular.

Format:Hardcover
In the early 20th century Zaida Ben-Yusuf was one of the most active photographers in New York City, creating many artistic and moving photos of major figures of her time as well as unusual self-portraits. This is the only in-depth study of her photography, pairing a catalog of her works - some 100 images - with a history and biographical survey linking Ben-Yusuf to her times and art. Any serious art library strong in American photography history must have this.
