Product Description

Product Description

This book is based upon two assumptions. The first is that "we teach who we are," and the second is that one's philosophy of life is intimately tied to one's identity, and that it is one's "philosophical identity" (conscious or otherwise) that ultimately dictates one's teaching style and also what distinguishes those who find joy and passion in the teaching profession from those who find drudgery and then simply pick up a paycheck every two weeks. In his book Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching, Mr. Perricone compellingly invites his reader to participate in an introspective journey that is designed to help the reader better know themselves and the professional path upon which they have embarked. This book is for those who are just beginning their careers in teaching, for veteran teachers who are still very open to personal and professional growth, and to those who are thinking about becoming teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, Jan 8 2006
By
David Westlake (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching (Paperback)
I am currently a teacher. Usually, I end up reading pretty heavy pedagogical material about the life of the child blah, blah, blah! I have to admit it usually is quite boring. Recently, my father, also a teacher, told me about this book. At first, I scoffed when he told me about how small and easy to read it was. Nevertheless, I found it in among my Hannukah presents. I read it in one sitting! It is true to its title, Zen. It communicates deep truths in a simple package that is always more than meets the eye. Since then, I have mentioned to others and am planning to use it for ideas in a professional development day at my school. For all you struggling teachers out there, read this and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars John Perricone Opens a Door, Feb 7 2006
By Mary C. Hasl - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching (Paperback)
In Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching John Perricone opens a door that every dedicated educator needs to walk through. With quick wit, and poignant examples John helps every educator to look inward in hopes of forming a philosophical identity. Reading John's book is like having coffee with a master teacher, who with kindness and compassion willingly shares the secrets of finding success and happiness as a career educator. As the mentor coordinator of a large school district, I interact with 200 new teachers every year, and it brings me great joy to share with them the wisdom of John Perricone. The beauty of John's book is that it not only inspires novice teachers to greatness, it also rekindles the long lost youthful enthusiasm once felt by veteran teachers. Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching is food for the teacher's soul. Treat yourself to 87 pages of magic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor- buy this book!, Mar 6 2005
By Gilbert R. Durham - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching (Paperback)
I've been teaching for 29 years and wish that I had read this book during year one. We need teachers who love the job and love their students and this book fosters both. It provides a philosophical foundation for the beginner and a refreshing reminder for the veteran. I won't keep it on my bookshelf- I'll loan it to friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book we've been waiting for...., Mar 5 2005
By Lynn E. Olcott - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching (Paperback)
Now, when schools and teachers are so poorly understood by the general public, along comes a book that gently tells the truth. It tells the truth about teaching as a joyous profession based on respect and a belief in positive outcomes. This book is modern, efficient, uplifting and ultimately fun to read and to use - whether you are a new teacher, a seasoned veteran, or someone concerned about kids and schools.
