Product Description

Product Description

Zero is a big round number. When she looks at herself, she just sees a hole right in her center. Every day she watches the other numbers line up to count: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 . . . !" "Those numbers have value. That's why they count," she thinks. But how could a number worth nothing become something? Zero feels empty inside. She watches One having fun with the other numbers. One has bold strokes and squared corners. Zero is big and round with no corners at all. "If I were like One, then I can count too," she thinks. So she pushes and pulls, stretches and straightens, forces and flattens herself, but in the end she realizes that she can only be Zero. As budding young readers learn about numbers and counting, they are also introduced to accepting different body types, developing social skills and character, and learning what it means to find value in yourself and in others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Countless Treats in Zero, Nov 30 2010

Kathrym Otoshi's One was a delight from cover to cover and won many awards. Her latest title, Zero will certainly be a strong contender as well. When Zero looks at herself in a mirror, she sees 'nothing.' She compares herself to other numbers and longs to have value. Self- conscious about her roundness, she lacks social skills and clumsily tries to join in some fun. Unfotunately, she flattens the other numbers in her attempt to join in.

Vibrant illustrations support a story that can be enjoyed on many different levels, whether enjoyed simply as a counting book or used as a jumping off point for discussions about individuality and self worth, Zero belongs on every child's bookshelf.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting approach..., July 13 2011

I kind of bought this on a whim to see what it was and if little one would like it. Overall, I am not that enthusiastic about the story nor the drawings. It's okay. I understand what it is trying to say and I appreciate that, but it wasn't really captivating for me.

So little one? Strangely into it, even though there is no way old enough to understand right now. Maybe I tell a good story :-)
I'm kind of glad I bought it, but if I had to do it again, I probably wouldn't buy it.

These two books are cute books and nice to read.
One is basically about how bullying can make others feel and how we should all stand up to bullies put in a very simple but effective story.
Zero is about self esteem again put in a simple effective.ZeroOne
