Induction Heating System Rice Cooker and Warmer
NP-GBC05 (Made in Japan)
The 3-cup capacity Induction Heating (IH) System Rice Cooker and Warmer is ideal for singles and smaller families. It cooks as little as 1/2-cup of rice and takes up minimal space. Superior IH technology efficiently prepares flawless rice every time.
What Is Induction Heating (IH)?
Our Induction Heating (IH) system rice cookers are the cutting edge in heating technology. Rather than the traditional heating element at the bottom of the rice cooker, these cookers utilize induction heating principles to heat the entire inner cooking pan.
When the inner cooking pan is placed into the rice cooker and the unit is activated, coils within the bottom of the rice cooker generate a magnetic field to create instant heat within the inner cooking pan. Through this technology, the inner cooking pan itself becomes the heat source, utilizing both high heat and fine heating adjustments to control the cooking process. IH rice cookers are also micom (micro computerized) rice cookers.

GABA Brown Setting (Brown Rice Activation)
The rice cooker activates brown rice by keeping the temperature inside the pan at about 104°F for 2 hours. By activating brown rice, GABA, one of the nutrients contained in brown rice, increases its amount 1.5 times as much as that contained in non-activated brown rice. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a type of amino acid said to lower blood pressure, improve kidney function, and relieve stress.

Our major beef however was with the power cord. It's extremely large and stiff. It's a 12-Ga cord which is suitable for a 60-amp appliance! It's totally overkill and makes the cord unmanageable on your counter as it doesn't bend at all and gets in the way.
FYI, the 5-1/2 cup model (NP-HBC10) does not come with this cord.
This unit is also made in China vs the 5-1/2-cup unit being made in Japan.
Ultimately we returned this unit and bought the 5-1/2 cup unit for the reasons stated above and are extremely happy with it.
As for the rice itself, it is delicious! We've made white rice and sweet rice and both have come out with more flavor than I've ever tasted in regular boiled rice. Both units cook similarly.
Conclusion: great rice, terrible cord. Recommend the slightly bigger model instead.
It made mahogany rice better than I can do in a pot. All other rice cookers that I tried left mahogany/wild rices hard and without flavour. The mahogany rice was fluffed up to more than double the volume I started with - each and every kernel was completely cooked and soft! There was no scorching or harder layer next to the pot.
Oatmeal made with milk (not water) was always burnt in previous rice cookers. Not here. When we got up, I opened the unit and added more milk and sweetener as all the milk had been absorbed. After my shower, the additional milk had been heated through. Spoon the oatmeal into a bowl and serve. Can it get any easier??
This unit does not take up as much counter space as other cookers that I've tried. You can tell from the start that it is a well made unit. The inner pot has the weight of a good quality pot - not some light aluminium thing. This helps even out the heat and the food doesn't start to cool down right away. The cord is short as most good appliance cords are so you don't have to coil it up on the counter. It is a heavy weight cord which shows the quality involved but also means that it is a little stiff.
Clean up is a breeze. The pot rinses out with a quick pass through the soapy water (even dried on oatmeal). The inner lid easily removes for cleaning. In fact, the inner lid dropped out with the press of the tab and was just as easy to snap back in place. A quick wipe inside and out is all that was needed.
I like the timer. You set the time that you want the food to be done and which type of cooking (white rice, etc) and walk away. I'm no longer figuring out how much time until supper.Read more ›
I love this thing. We are a family of two adults plus one toddler and we usually only make small quantities of rice so it fits the bill perfectly. I made GABA brown rice this morning and it will be ready when I get home for lunch, then will be perfectly kept warm until I get home after work.
I also use it for Congee, although I slightly modify the recommended ratio to fit my personal taste. I just turn it on before bed and wake up to perfect Congee every time.
Also, the pot is super easy to clean ... more so than any other non-stick pot I own.

We are three in our family, and this cooker is just the right size. We use basmati rice and it turns out nice and fluffy so you can taste each grain.Published on Feb. 7 2013 by Mohnish Kamat
