5.0 out of 5 stars A highly under-rated game July 30 2013
By S. K. L. Ip TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Most critics underrate this game, and I think it is very unfair. ZombiU is a very challenging game while it is enjoyable in every moment during the gameplay that survival and ammo conservation mean everything.

I have completed Dead Space 2 in hardcore mode, and I know how challenging a video game can be. ZombiU is one of them. The scary atmosphere is almost like the first two Silent Hill games and Fatal Frame which remain the best horror games ever. It is so freaky not just because of zombies, but because you don't want to die. Unlike Resident Evil games aiming for mindless people that the player can die again and again, ZombiU is unforgiving. In regular mode, you die and you start over at the safe house, and you'll have to re-earn the skills and to fight all the way to the point where you die, hoping that you find your-zombie-self and recover the items that you have lost in the backpack, and continue the campaign tasks. The key is to build up a habit of stocking up inventory in the safe house, just in case if you die and you have something left for the next. In survival mode, you die and it is game over.

Using WiiU Pad is essential for the game, as you will need to use it to scan the area for zombies, CCTV camera, hacking, doors, items, etc. I kind of feel like playing Fatal Frame and Fallout 3 (with the pipboy). The gameplay is not repetitive at all; some of the tunnel areas leading to the safe house look the same, but it doesn't mean the game is repetitive. There are 3 difficulty levels in campaign: regular (chicken), regular and survival. I first played regular to get familiarized with locations, enemies, and missions. Then, I develop a strategy to play in survival mode that you can only live once; you die and it's over.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Long Will You Survive? March 17 2013

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
ZombiU is an intensely frightening horror survival game in which the player attempts to stay alive as long as possible while exploring zombie-infested London, scavenging supplies and trying to piece together a cure by collecting the writings of 16th century occultist, John Dee, to help create what he called 'the panacea.' This is no easy feat. The game is hard...very hard. If your character dies there is no reload; no backsies. You start with a brand new character. Furthermore, if your character is bitten he or she becomes infected and rises as one of them. You'll need to go back to where your last character died and kill it in order to retrieve your gear. If you're looking for a cathartic zombie-killing first-person-shooter game with which to relax after a long day at work or school, look elsewhere. This is not the game for you.

ZombiU is intense, scary, and difficult and will leave you with your hands trembling and your heart beating out of your chest. The tone of the game is very dark, grim, and suspenseful. You will often need to explore sewers and catacombs by the dim illumination of your flashlight, and danger lurks around every corner. The pace of the game is very slow; successful players will proceed cautiously, plan out every move, and know when to run. Even this is not enough to see you through. This is a game that will challenge you on all levels. Characters gain no extraordinary powers or abilities - they are ordinary people from all walks of life, and while there are weapons to be scavenged, ammunition is always in short supply. You will often be down to your trusty cricket bat to fend off the ravenous dead. If you're a horror buff with a steady hand and a cool nerve, and are up for a real challenge, ZombiU cannot be beat. It is simply outstanding.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best games to show off your Wii U Nov. 28 2012

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
ZombiU is one of those rare launch games that could have failed on so many levels. Fortunately it does a great job of creating a fun and vivid world and just plain being a fun game over all. This isn't Resident Evil 4-6. This is a slow paced game, exploration is key. Item management is crucial. The game uses the new gamepad in unique ways. Hold it in front of you and you can scan the environment for items and enemies. This turns your living room into a virtual game space since you have to move the gamepad around in order for your character to do the same. What makes it effective is that you are looking through your gamepad and viewing the game as if you were the character on screen. Going into your backpack causes your character to drop to one knee while you frantically swipe the gamepad to arrange your items. You can be attacked if you do not keep an eye on the main screen as you play with the gamepad. Finally, it acts like a radar. You press a button and Zombies will "ping" on the gamepad's map of the area. You may have noticed that I mentioned your character without giving a name. That is because you will be playing as many different characters. When one dies, your new character must find the zombie version of the character you just played in order to reclaim your items. The game is fun, but the combat does take some time to get used to. I went through a stretch where I lost four characters in about ten minutes before I was able to beat the battle. Once you get the hang of combat, the game become much more fun. If you like horror games, and miss the fact that "scary" games just are not scary anymore, than this game is for you.
