From Publishers Weekly

In this outrageous parody of a survival guide, Saturday Night Live staff writer Brooks prepares humanity for its eventual battle with zombies. One would expect the son of Mel Brooks to have a genetic predisposition to humor, and indeed, he does, and he exhibits it relentlessly here: he outlines virtually every possible zombie-human encounter, drafts detailed plans for defense and attack and outlines past recorded attacks dating from 60,000 B.C. to 2002. In planning for that catastrophic day when "the dead rise," Brooks urges readers to get to know themselves, their bodies, their weaponry, their surroundings and, just in case, their escape routes. Some of the book's more amusing aspects are the laughable analyses Brooks proposes on all aspects of zombiehood, and the specificity with which he enumerates the necessary actions for survival-i.e., a member of an anti-zombie team must be sure to have with him at all times two emergency flares, a signaling mirror, daily rations, a personal mess kit and two pairs of socks. Comic, though unnecessarily exhaustive, this is a good bet for Halloween gag gifts and fans of Bored of the Rings-esque humor. 100 line drawings.

5.0étoiles sur 5 The definitive scholarly compilation on zombology, Avril 23 2004

Finally, a man who understands the all-too-real threat of the living dead and who posesses the eloquence to present it convincingly! Max Brooks has produced a small wonder of a book in the Zombie Survival Guide, a book which provides the average American reader (through hands-on experience, published scientific research and historical accounts) with a comprehensive guide to surviving multiple levels of zombie infestation. Stripping away popular zombie myths, Brooks cuts through the morass of media misinformation with a book based firmly in the terrible reality of the undead. Easy-to-follow chapters on recommended weaponry, small-unit tactics and defensive fortification provide an easy entrance into the frightening world of the undead for the novice zombologist, while seasoned veterans will appreciate the elaborate instructions on how to survive the dreaded "Class 4" infestation. With a balanced mix of the practical, the historical and the scientific, this book has something for everyone. If you buy only one book on zombology, make it this one.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Excellent book, a MUST READ for fans of Romero zombie lore!!, Mars 16 2004
Par The Poe Toaster (Seattle, WA United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I guess the only reason this book is published and shelved in the "humor" category is because pretty much nobody believes that zombies are real. But other than that, it's not a very humorous book...... it mostly deals with horror, violence and cannibalism. It's basically like watching a Romero zombie flim in book form.

I guess one of the reasons everyone thinks it's a humor book is because the author is a SNL staff writer and the son of Mel Brooks. Well, I think maybe there are assumptions being made because this book doesn't read like something that was written to make people laugh.... it reads like something that someone wrote knowing no one would believe most of what's in it but not caring in the least.

I don't agree that it's a parody or a book of humor or tounge in cheek or any of that..... I think that Max Brooks wants to believe that zombies can exist and has written this book for the rest of us who also want to believe that it's not just horror fiction. Hey.... Mulder wanted to believe in UFO's, and there are those of us who want to believe in all kinds of things. There are a lot of people out there who want to believe that zombies can exist because they want to pit their skills against them.... same reason people go ghost hunting and the minute some place is rumored to be haunted you have 3,000 tourists there every year.

Those of you out there who want to think that the whole zombie business is the stuff of bad Z-grade horror flicks and nothing more, that's why this book is published under "humor." You can laugh at this book and take it as a parody.... whatever works for you.

Those of you who enjoy Romero flicks, the new Dawn of the Dead movie starring Ving Rhames, the Resident Evil films, etc., and wonder what you would do if a zombie virus outbreak actually did occur, this book is for you......and as one of your fellow zombie lore enthusiasts I HIGHLY recommend this book.
