Not great but essential in a Zappa collection, May 8 2004
This review is from: Zoot Allures (Audio CD)
I would actually give this album 3 and a half but the computer isnt civilized enough to let me. Anyway, I am GUs Fogle, see more about me to get reviews on great music so that you can spend your money on it. Anyway again, I'm through talking buisiness, back to the album; Zoot allures was originally released in 1976, it was a follow-up from the rare, Bongo Fury, which is a great live album. The first track, Wind up workin' in a gas station may be a little too progresive for some but nevertheless, it is a good listen, the superior version of Black napkins is featured here with a blistering guitar solo by zappa. The torture never stops is especially sleazy, it is a bit stretched in its twelve minutes but it doesnt fail to entertain. Ms. Pinky is a good song but never was a hit, like most zappa songs. Find her finer is just filler as well as friendly little finger, these songs are misplaced badly. Wonderful wino is a better guitar piece than a song because it does have some good riffs but the song itself seems muddled. Zoot allures the song, if you can appreciate it, is a very beautiful piece of instrumental music. The finaly, disco boy, is a perfect closer to this not quite perfect but good album. Davey Moire does vocals on "Gas Station." Terry Bozzio plays well on drums but he isnt quite as smooth here as he is on Bongo Fury, released in 1975, I suggest you get Zoot Allures and Bongo Fury together.

A tribute to Heavy Metal... Remember?!?, May 5 2004
This review is from: Zoot Allures (Audio CD)
I like this record a lot. I have read many of the reviews for this record by Amazonians and have found valid points in many. This is not really a typical Zappa album. But I remeber in '76 when it came out, Zappa described it as his tribute to Heavy Metal (in his own tougue & cheek way). Thirty years later, I listen to it and this record excites me more than most metal albums of that era. His mixing from song into next song was so typical for the time and Zappa does it with expertise! It is a fun and RUSHING record. Excellent spin!
