Full body yoga routine,
By Vynne (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: am / pm Yoga for Beginners (DVD)
This DVD is a good overall introduction to yoga for beginners. The segments are sorted into either AM routines or PM routines. The shorter routines are basically focussing on breath, with the addition of a couple of relaxing poses, while the longer sequences are a combination of backbends, twists, leg stretches, and inversions that provide a good full body stretch. Most of my focus has been on the PM routines, since that is when I have time to do yoga. My favourite is the Energizing Evening, and I find I am always surprised it goes by so fast, so I can say it does keep my attention throughout. (For morning people, the Wake up the Spine routine from the AM section is fairly similar). In this segment, even as a beginner, I can do most poses without modifications, except Lord of the Fishes, which I modify into a crosslegged twist because I find my plus-sized body gets in the way of the actual pose. Benagh's style is to hold the poses for quite a while, which is good for newbies or those who are less coordinated, as it gives plenty of time to get into the pose. While her voiceover is not perfectly synchronized with what she is doing on the screen, I find that it is sufficient just to take the verbal direction, and check the screen once in a while to see if I'm doing it right. The setting is beside a beach, with waves rolling in, and gentle elevator music in the background. Benagh does make some limited use of props, such as a strap, block, and blankets, but these are not essential to the practice if you don't have them, or are like me and find placing and removing props to be too much of an interuption. I gave the DVD 4 stars rather than 5 because the routines were not filmed in one sitting. Rather, they were filmed in segments, then the various segments are combined to form the different sequences on the DVD. In some cases the sequence combinations were not well planned, so that one scene ends on the floor, while the next scene starts in a standing position, causing the viewer to have to catch up with the routine. In all, however, this is my favourite yoga DVD, I use it several times a week. Since starting a regular practice, my chronic back pain is gone, and I feel stronger and more focussed. This DVD has been a big part of that and I recommend it to anyone looking to enhance their flexibility and improve their health with yoga.

Did a good intro to Yoga. Rather repetitive and quickly changes positions while not always explaining them. I found some of it too hard for a beginner.

This video is good because it has several programs for both morning and evening that do not require a lot of time. Even if you only feel like a quick stretch there is a 10 minute session! The music and setting are nice. The instructor does not talk too much and offers modifications which are nice. I would not use this video to learn yoga. The beginner label is true, but it is not very educational. Definitely NOT an introductory video. She does not describe all aspects of the poses, and it is very easy to do a pose incorrectly in yoga. I use this video to supplement with my classes and it does well for that. The only real complaint for this video is that sometimes her cues for poses do not match up with what she is doing. Being a good listener helps that if you have already seen what she will do next it is quite easy to get over.
