This DVD is a good overall introduction to yoga for beginners. The segments are sorted into either AM routines or PM routines. The shorter routines are basically focussing on breath, with the addition of a couple of relaxing poses, while the longer sequences are a combination of backbends, twists, leg stretches, and inversions that provide a good full body stretch.

Most of my focus has been on the PM routines, since that is when I have time to do yoga. My favourite is the Energizing Evening, and I find I am always surprised it goes by so fast, so I can say it does keep my attention throughout. (For morning people, the Wake up the Spine routine from the AM section is fairly similar). In this segment, even as a beginner, I can do most poses without modifications, except Lord of the Fishes, which I modify into a crosslegged twist because I find my plus-sized body gets in the way of the actual pose.

Benagh's style is to hold the poses for quite a while, which is good for newbies or those who are less coordinated, as it gives plenty of time to get into the pose. While her voiceover is not perfectly synchronized with what she is doing on the screen, I find that it is sufficient just to take the verbal direction, and check the screen once in a while to see if I'm doing it right.

The setting is beside a beach, with waves rolling in, and gentle elevator music in the background. Benagh does make some limited use of props, such as a strap, block, and blankets, but these are not essential to the practice if you don't have them, or are like me and find placing and removing props to be too much of an interuption.

I gave the DVD 4 stars rather than 5 because the routines were not filmed in one sitting.

This video is good because it has several programs for both morning and evening that do not require a lot of time. Even if you only feel like a quick stretch there is a 10 minute session!

The music and setting are nice. The instructor does not talk too much and offers modifications which are nice.

I would not use this video to learn yoga. The beginner label is true, but it is not very educational. Definitely NOT an introductory video. She does not describe all aspects of the poses, and it is very easy to do a pose incorrectly in yoga. I use this video to supplement with my classes and it does well for that.

The only real complaint for this video is that sometimes her cues for poses do not match up with what she is doing. Being a good listener helps that if you have already seen what she will do next it is quite easy to get over.

I have been using Barbara's DVDs for about a year now and this is one of them. It is very good with a selection of many workouts for both the morning and evening. The routines range from 15 minutes to an hour and are generally as follows (there is alot, but it is a general overview)

AM Routines

Exercises to get you going for the day, with a couple of nice shorter ones which you can fit into before work.

Get Up and Go 15 Minutes. - Includes upper back openers, including down dog, quarter dog, and cobra

Sun Salutation Centering 15 Minutes. Salutation and seated forward bends

Breath Work 30 Minutes. This is done lying down and seated and one that anyone can easily do with a combination of various items including twists and supported poses. Also has some meditation to help center you.

Gentle Wake Up 35 Minutes. Reclined postures and some twists.

Extended Morning 35 Minutes. nice more active practice that includes a side stretch, and tree, triangle, side angle, and warrior.

Wake Up the Spine 35 Minutes. Salutation and standing poses, works way to some seated poses.

PM Routines

The PM are different exercises than the AM, and in fact there is a different outfit than the AM, which is a nice touch. These are generally meant to relax you after the day.

Short Rest 10 Minutes, A nice short practice that is really effective just to relax which includes twists and breathing.

Breath Work 20 Minutes. Shoulder stretches and seated twist and then has seated meditation, breath work, and savasana. Another very relaxing thing to do.

Unwinding Muscle Tension 20 Minutes. Really nice way to do what it says, with various types of gentle twists to loosen up and relax.

I am not a yogi. I am not coordinated. I am not graceful. But I really REALLY like this DVD. I have bought yoga/exercise DVDs before and I've been disappointed because I couldn't find the time to do an entire 45-50 minute workout OR because it became monotonous. That's where AM PM Yoga is most useful for me - there are a number of choices (variety!) with a range of different time frames involved. I can do 10 minutes or 40 minutes and I'd never get bored with the same old thing. If you're like me, hearing the same phrase or seeing the same error over and over again in a DVD makes you crazy, so the variety is nice.

I also appreciated that it's separated into morning and evening routines because, as mentioned earlier, I don't have a lot of experience with yoga and I need someone to give me pre-set energizing or unwinding routines. Another benefit for those of us who are still learning is the slow progression of the exercises. In previous DVDs, I found that by the time I had successfully gotten into the pose, the instructor was already on the next pose and I was constantly feeling left behind. During the segments on this DVD I feel like I know what I'm doing and that confidence translates to better concentration and relaxation.

As I said, I have a small stack of DVDs at home that have been tried and never really 'fit'. This is the one I recommend to all my friends.
