Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

There's a Condé Nast Traveler article fighting to get out of bestseller Buffett's first new novel in a decade, a groovily laid-back, ramblingly anecdotal, sun-soaked bit of Caribbean escapism that his Parrothead fans will relish like another chorus of "Margaritaville." Tully Mars, a 40-ish ex-cowboy turned guide at the Lost Boys Fishing Lodge island resort, undertakes various sojourns around the Caribbean, to Mayan ruins, a jungle safari camp, a spring break bacchanal in Belize. Nothing much happens—"That day, we spent the rest of the daylight hours on the shallow waters of Ascension Bay and the lagoon amid incredible natural beauty unlike anything I had ever seen before" is about as busy as it gets—except that Tully meets a parade of colorful natives and expatriates, including a Mayan medicine man, a British commando and a 103-year-old woman who skippers a sailing schooner and wants to restore a historic lighthouse on Cayo Loco, the titular island. The characters are all hospitality entrepreneurs, and Buffett (A Pirate Looks at Fifty) also gives them shaggy-dog anecdotes, tidbits of Caribbean history and desultory life lessons to relate. There are glimmers of plot—bounty hunters, loves lost and found—but mostly Tully has little to do but savor the accommodations and atmospherics of tourist locales while the sea washes him with waves of love, happiness and maturity as infallibly as the tides. This book is as cheery and tropical as Buffet's music.

From AudioFile

Just one short step ahead of the law, cowboy and lost soul Tully Mars finds himself fishing for a living in the Caribbean. This wild, unbelievable but thoroughly enjoyable story follows the lyrics of Buffet's song of the same name, and the music appropriately marks the beginning and end of each CD. Narrator John David Souther transports the listener, beautifully portraying Tully's struggle to find himself and his way forward. And as one might expect from Jimmy Buffet, Tully gets where he's going through a lot of fishing, sailing, and partying. The story has the feel of a modern-day pirate adventure, with the gold being self-discovery and a place in the world. Souther, with his sensitive, laid-back voice, drops the listener into the somewhat predictable but entertaining action. 2.0 out of 5 stars Salty Piece of You Know What, Jan 5 2007
By Andrew Stempki "The Captain" (Florida) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I read this book when I first moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It was fun reading about characters that came from the very place I happened to be, but that was all that I got from this book. Buffett has got to stop rambling on about incredibly absurd details when he tells a story. He refuses to let up with stories about stories that leaves the reader gasping for a breath of rationality. Tully Mars voice, while consistent, is idiotic and far-fetched. Buffett's use of the simile has got to be drug out on a beach and buried deep in the sand.
One of the massive failures is the letters from Willie Singer. The long winded tails from Willie decapitate the readers ability to "get into" the book. I believe the last letter from Willie is almost 50 pages. Buffett has also got to stop using his songs and lyrics througout the book. That sort of selfish writing also seems to extinquish the readers ability to accept the novel as honest and authentic. Jimmy, if you're reading this, quit writing long tales and stick to making rock and roll albums or hang up the flip flops.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Singer song writer but fair novelist at best, Jan 9 2005
I am a huge Buffet fan, but somebody should tell Jimmy to stick to singing! This is a rambling tale that really has no plot no begining and no end. The main purpose seems to be to take the reader on a cruise of the Caribean with little or no purpose. He does try and develop a cast of memerobale characters, but most fall flat with no soul -- which is hard to understand given his musical genuis for creating great characters in his song. There really is nothing here, I finished the book 24 hours ago and I can't even remmeber what it was about. The only reason this book made it to print was because the author's name is Jimmy Buffett.

Also recommended: 'A Tourist in the Yucatan' cool thriller that has become an underground hit!
