Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Earnestly recounting how 45 successful women achieved their dreams, McMeekin aims to provide "mentors" who can help readers transcend creative blocks as they follow her program for personal transformation. Drawing heavily on the work of Shakti Gawain, the originator of "creative visualization," and Sarah Ban Breathnach, author of Simple Abundance, McMeekin's approach rests on three "gateways": honoring one's creativity, assembling inner and outer resources, and maintaining "abundance" through "positive priorities." Within each area, McMeekin offers familiar "secrets" for tapping inner resources to reach one's goals, such as through building a team of empowering allies or facing down one's fear of criticism. Numerous case studies of remarkable women--ranging from Jungian analyst Clarissa Pinkola Est?s and entrepreneur Joline Godfrey to children's book illustrator Jan Brett and restaurateur Lydia Shire, as well as McMeekin herself, who triumphed over chronic fatigue syndrome--illustrate each point. Unfortunately, the biographical profiles rarely convey the emotional highs and lows of each woman's transformative journey. In addition, readers who must contend with physical or financial barriers to success may also feel distanced from the women in the book, whose obstacles are addressed primarily in psychological terms. Still, McMeekin's practical guide will help highly motivated readers reflect on their past failures and successes in order to design their own road map for an inspired life. (Mar.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Recharge your creative batteries!, April 4 2004
By Debbie (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
Gail McMeekin's book came at just the right time for me! I had a lot of creative ideas bouncing around in my head, as usual, and not a lot of clarity or direction about how to manifest those ideas. Not only is Gail's book inspiring and FUN to read, the practical advice launched me back into doing my own writing and organizing my time much more efficiently. I felt immediately energized and less alone with the process. The interview material is woven together in an accessible, thoughtful way -- clearly a labor of love. The book design is extraordinary and original -- even more inspiring!

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat vague, psychological perspective, Jun 17 2001
By A Customer
I've bought the book but been unable to really get interested in reading it, despite the topic being exactly what I want to learn about. Two biggest downsides to me: the book is written from a very right-brain, psychologist-type perspective (in fact, the book even interviews many counselors and psychologists, which adds to that impression); and, the book pulls too heavily from a limited pool of interviewees. There are 45 women mentioned, but often the quotes are from just a very few, who may not have a perspective that interests you (again, very right brain-ish). I found myself wishing for a different treatment; and luckily, there are other books that do this more to my taste, including "Women's Ventures, Women's Visions," "Our Wildest Dreams," etc. If you (unlike me) LOVE right brainish, psychological "takes" on things, you will probably LOVE this book. It's pretty clear that it wasn't a good fit for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely practical, Jul 10 2004
By "sueb398" (Houston, Texas) - See all my reviews
Not only is the book inspirational but it is also very practical: step by step, working through every possible roadblock to even thinking you are NOT creative. Then, after that hurdle is attained, the author ventures into putting your creativity into action. It is truly a portable mentor with plentiful resources. And, it's also a great read. The format is a blend of wonderful short vignettes - versus just long drawn out chapters of how-to bios. Thanks to the author and to the editor.
