5.0 out of 5 stars Diamond is forever, May 16 2008

"There are two types of people in the world: those who like Neil Diamond and those who don't." - quote from the movie "What About Bob?"

If you're in the latter category, please read no further.

If you're still with me, this is a "pretty amazing" album from the evergreen Mr. Diamond, taking us back to his music of the seventies, namely the "Song Sung Blue" and "Sweet Caroline" period. There's also no complaining about the length of the album, as there are five songs that are six minutes and above, and only one track below four minutes.

American Idol viewers would have been treated to a live performance of the single "Pretty Amazing Grace", and if you liked that one, you're really going to enjoy this album.

Other recommended tracks are:

If I Don't See You Again - the first song on the album, and the longest at 7 minutes 14 seconds.

Another Day (That Time Forgot) - with Dixie Chick Natalie Maines

Forgotten - lots of guitars

Act Like a Man - a little Moon River, a little Country, pure Diamond

Whose Hands Are These - a folksy, inspiring treasure with heavy guitar and piano backing

No Words - you'll be hooked from the intro (personal favorite)

This is vintage Diamond, and I predict a very good year indeed.
Recommended - just recommended - buy it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling., May 14 2008
By G.Villan (travelling around the world) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Powered back to credibility by 2005's "12 Songs", the re-booted Neil Diamond sticks with producer Rick Rubin for this follow-up, and retains Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench on guitar and keyboards. David Campbell's orchestral arrangements sweeten the sparseness, but the core of these 12 songs is still a weather-beaten sixtysomething battling the big questions of love and faith with a foghorn voice and an old acoustic guitar.
"Just go out there and face what you did before / Did it once you can do it once more", Neil Diamond sings on one of the album's many highlights.
Quality control slips occasionally, and guest Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines turns out for the turgid, haunting duet "Another Day (That Time Forgot", but is criminally wasted.
Diamond strikes gold with the album's first single, the Spanish-inflected "Pretty Amazing Grace" and the bluesy "Don't Go There". Diamond cuts deeper lyrically and the production is even simpler, utilizing hard-strummed acoustic guitars to carry the melody and provide percussion.
Simple is often best, such as the beguiling country tune "Act Like a Man" or the garage-band vamp of "Forgotten".
Saga-rock rarely sounded so good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Let the words sink in, Nov 13 2008

The more I listen, the more I like. The music if beautiful, the lyrics also. You have to listen a few times to really get the feel of it. It's worth while.
