Just because your mother never hectored you about good behaviour in sexual situations the way she reminded you to say please and thank you over dinner doesn't mean you shouldn't observe etiquette in the bedroom. That's pretty much the upshot of lifestyle columnist Josey Vogels's aptly named
Bedside Manners. As she writes in her introduction, "I'm constantly amazed at the discourteous behaviour people exhibit when getting naked with another human being." And judging by her book, Vogels has seen some pretty unsightly stuff in her day. Her aim is to help us correct the error of our ways. Pointing and laughing at a partner's just-revealed and somewhat dainty manhood is the least of it; Vogels demands even the swingers among us adhere to polite rules of engagement. That goes double for the partner holding the used condom at the end of a session.
Bedside Manners covers just about every scenario one might find oneself in, from watching pornography to attending an orgy. Sections are light and lively with sidebars bringing bite-size trivia, Canadiana, and notes from the sexual archives to the mix. Admittedly, some of Vogels's points are pretty obvious (don't lie about your appearance when connecting online, for instance) and there are many missed opportunities for gonzo humour. But anyone who has endured a night sleeping on the wet spot will welcome her candid counsel.
