Book Description

Bulldog: Spirit of the New Entrepreneur is not another "ninety-nine essential ways to start your own company and make money." Instead, it is a blend of one woman's story, her hard-won insights and entrepreneurial wisdom. Against an explosive backdrop of high-tech and new media growth, inspirational and informative anecdotes clearly outline the need to redefine the new entrepreneur as someone who is professional and studied ' but as risk-oriented and agile as ever. Bulldog is a guide that addresses the entrepreneur as a whole person, whose motivations, talents and insights are an intrinsic part of successes and failures.

Ellie Rubin, co-founder of Bulldog, embodies the essence of the next generation of entrepreneurs. In seven years, she has led her company from a traditional design service business into one of North America's leading multimedia productions houses and then on to pioneering one of the hottest new niches in software ' media asset management. From managing these radical shifts in company direction to opening offices in the Silicon Valley, from forging alliances with such high-tech players as Apple, Informix, Microsoft, Oracle, SGI and Tandem to raising over $15 million in outside investment, Ellie Rubin has piloted a roller-coaster business ride that will be instantly recognizable to any entrepreneur.

Well-known and admired for her ability to profit from the convergence of technology, design and business, as well as her intuitive skill in identifying opportunities and assessing risk, Ellie Rubin has propelled both herself and her company to the forefront of new media technology. Dedicated to evangelizing the process through the telling of her own story as well as through the experiences of other entrepreneurs she has met along the way, she has come to understand that every new entrepreneur is in the same business ' the business of change. By identifying the pivotal trigger points for successfully navigating through change, she explains how "entrepreneuring" is all about embracing risk and imbalance, about mastering interpretation ' not invention ' and delineates how to turn the relentless challenges that entrepreneurship demands into a journey that is graced with what she refers to as "angels of advantage":

• The new entrepreneur is someone who embodies the art of storytelling as a powerful leadership tool, providing a logical format for "creating something out of nothing"

• Without a fierce dedication to seeking out "champions" to help "connect the dots" and achieve one's goals, the entrepreneurial dream will never evolve beyond a great idea

•Magical Realism isn't just a literary term, it is the required state of mind of the new entrepreneur

• Cachet is the intangible side of marketing and must be written into any business plan; when it is present, magic prevails

• Converging technology is part of a continuum of business transformations; the new entrepreneur doesn't try to understand everything about convergence, but finds a point of entry right in the middle of the chaos it creates

• Trend-hopping is the first step toward creating a business plan

• For the new entrepreneur, the key idea is leverage, leverage, leverage. Not surprisingly, as the bulldog icon suggests, entrepreneuring also requires a certain level of tenacity and strength

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars!, Feb 3 2003
By A Customer
Anyone who has any notions of being an entrepreneur, or even climbing the ranks within a larger organization needs to read this book. It is filled with stories that inspire and motivate but also help you see the barriers and challenges of business in a new light. You don't have to read the book cover to cover but can pick and choose whatever catches your attention. I particularly liked the references to film, literature and poetry that provide insight and perspective as well as entertainment in the sidebars. If you manage teams, don't forget the chapter called THE TO DO LIST OF ARCHITECTS AND HEROES.

5.0 out of 5 stars I completely disagree with the above negative critique, Jan 30 2003
By A Customer
As a fellow 20 year entrepreneur with 200 employees, I loved how Ellie Rubin turned the word entrepreneur into a verb! How cool is that?? (For all of us who actually do it on a daily basis, day in and day out).

Yes, there is an element of "touchy feeley" in the book, but since when is entrepreneuring a science? Being a great entrepreneur has everything to do with your instincts, creating something incredible when all the other rational people tell you it can't be done. Most of the "aha" ideas I've had for my company came from the kinds of things Ellie talks about in her book. If you want to know how to start or grow a company, those things are the things you should be thinking about.

Ellie Rubin's brilliance is proven by the fact that even the book that she has written about her own business has turned her in to a brand herself! I see all over the place that the Ellie Rubin brand is doing speaking engagements at business schools, creating supplemetary materials and so on. In essence, Ellie seems to have created another business out of her book about her original business! That is pure genius as far as I'm concerned. And why didn't I think of it myself, dammit!

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration, Jan 25 2003
Cudos to Rubin for shedding light on the ups, downs and excitment of running your own business. Although many of us have dreamed of being an entrepreneur there are few that are brave enough to take the leap of faith. Combine Rubin's tenacity and balls for starting a business in a mostly 'male dominated' industry with the strength and wherewithall to relive the experience and transcribe it into a book and you have nothing short of a modern day hero. Building a business from an office of two in Canada to securing major investors and partners in Silicon Valley and LA, Bulldog is the story of a modern day success driven by ambition, smarts and confidence. Using her insights to help guide us on this incredible journey called 'entrepreneuring' Rubin not only creates a new language for those voyagers who are brave enough to embark on the trip, but also provides the ABC's of how to believe in yourself enough to succeed. Rubin is insightful while still allowing the reader to feel like they have entered her world -- if you are someone who has always dreamed of starting your own business then don't even think about it unless you read this book first.

The only question Rubin leaves us asking is: when is her second book coming out and what will she entice us with next???
