From Publishers Weekly

Gregory's full-blown first novel is a marvelously assured period piece, an English gothic with narrative verve. Beatrice Lacey loves nothing more than the family estate, Wideacrenot her bluff, hearty father, her weak brother, Harry, or her mother, who can't quite believe mounting evidence that damns her passionate daughter. Foiled in her hunger to own the estate by the 18th century laws of entail, Beatrice plots her father's death, knowing she can twist Harry in any direction she chooses, for her brother harbors a dark, perverted secret. Their incestuous tangle is not broken even by Harry's marriage. And while a bounteous harvest multiplies, no one gainsays the young squire and his sister, the true master of Wideacre. Beatrice marries also, managing to hide the paternity of two children sired by Harry until her increasing greed squeezes the land and its people dry, and the seeds of destruction she has sown come to their awful fruition. Gregory effortlessly breathes color and life into a tale of obsession built around a ruthless, fascinating woman. Doubleday Book Club main selection; Literary Guild alternate; major ad/promo.

Review

'This is a story of violent love and unsettling passions. It will never let you rest for a page as you wait for the climax that must come for the people and the land' Maeve Binchy 'Amid all the social upheaval strides Beatrice Lacey, who, for singlemindedness, tempestuousness, passion, amorality, sensuality and plain old-fashioned evil, knocks Scarlet O'Hara into short cotton socks' Evening Standard

5.0étoiles sur 5 the best read in a long time!!, Jui 28 2005

(REAL NAME)
In error, I read Favored Child first, the second in this series. I enjoyed it so much that i had to buy Wideacre and get the history on this story. I was drawn in by Beatrice's absolute passion to keep her land, whatever cost. Some reviews condemn the incestual tones but to Beatrice it was not insatiable lust,it was only a means to get what she wanted...Wideacre. She was incapable of loving anyone or anything except the land. Beatrice was bitter for the comforts that only male gentry were allowed, such as ownership and freedom of choice. Her obsession with the land drove her to do unspeakable acts and caused her to be hated by many and feared by everyone but one man. A man she could not control or love.
Once i had read Wideacre and Favored Child I couln't wait to read the final book in the series, Meridon. To consume the full scope of the three generations you must read all three.

3.0étoiles sur 5 More like 3.5 stars...., Fév 21 2008
This review is from: Wideacre: A Novel (Paperback)
I have nothing against it. I really don't see why people are making it such a huge deal.

Yes, there are themes such as incest, and the main character isn't what you expect from an average novel. But I brushed all those off. I didn't find them very shocking or horrifying.

I guess I'll address about the actual book first. It's actually not bad, and it starts off wonderfully, it's just that Greogory had a pretty rough start, because after Beatrice's father died, it was kind of dragging until she married. She actually had a huge plan which I thought could really become truly dark, which unfortunately it didn't. (And goodness knows how many pages that was) But once she did, it was almost as if she went through a transformation of pure evil that became interesting. Highly entertaining to the ending. For those that think dull of the first third of the book, do hold on.

Now, after all those bad choices Beatrice makes, it kind of steers off to a really weird ending. You'll have to read it yourself, but I personally feel that it shouldn't have ended like that.

As for the horrifying evil, I didn't think it was actually that 'evil'. Some moves were brillant, and I can see how important it was for her grand scheme, but trust me, I've seen far worse. Whatever Beatrice did didnt even compare to some dramas that I've saw.

And the incest, for some reason, I didn't care. It was just another weird detail that the character had to cope with. You dont' really need to pay attention to that aspect, if it does sicken you.

This is a good book, but rather dull at times. Good for long train rides or any other boring events that'll be a few hours long. (I read this through a wedding, and rushed through it til 2 am in the end)

* Interesting note: My expectations for the character's evilness was actually not met. I expected to her to be a far more darker woman then the actual character.

4.0étoiles sur 5 A strange mix of love and hate ..., Déc 6 2006
Par Hermiownee (Montreal, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: Wideacre: A Novel (Paperback)
I guess we all love a book which presents characters we can love or somehow indentify ourselves with. In the case of "Wideacre" I just HATE Beatrice Lacey! At every page, I kept wondering who would (please!) thwart her plans and how she would finally pay for her treachery. And although I resent everything about Beatrice, I was hooked to the story and I kept reading and reading to the very end.

And THERE lies Philippa Gregory's talent! And THERE, a distinction must be made between the horrible, horrible main character and the author's marvellous job on captivating us through the whole story.
