Hobbits and wizards and Sauron--oh, my! Mild-mannered Oxford scholar John Ronald Reuel Tolkien had little inkling when he published The Hobbit; Or, There and Back Again in 1937 that, once hobbits were unleashed upon the world, there would be no turning back. Hobbits are, of course, small, furry creatures who love nothing better than a leisurely life quite free from adventure. But in that first novel and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo and their elfish friends get swept up into a mighty conflict with the dragon Smaug, the dark lord Sauron (who owes much to proud Satan in Paradise Lost), the monstrous Gollum, the Cracks of Doom, and the awful power of the magical Ring. The four books' characters--good and evil--are recognizably human, and the realism is deepened by the magnificent detail of the vast parallel world Tolkien devised, inspired partly by his influential Anglo-Saxon scholarship and his Christian beliefs. (He disapproved of the relative sparseness of detail in the comparable allegorical fantasy his friend C.S. Lewis dreamed up in The Chronicles of Narnia, though he knew Lewis had spun a page-turning yarn.) It has been estimated that one-tenth of all paperbacks sold can trace their ancestry to J.R.R. Tolkien. But even if we had never gotten Robert Jordan's The Path of Daggers and the whole fantasy genre Tolkien inadvertently created by bringing the hobbits so richly to life, Tolkien's epic about the Ring would have left our world enhanced by enchantment. --Tim Appelo

Review

'An extraordinary book... the story itself is superb.' The Observer 'Masterpiece? Oh yes, I've no doubt about that.' Evening Standard 'Among the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the 20th century.' Sunday Telegraph 'A story magnificently told.' New Statesman 'An extraordinarily imaginative work, part saga, part allegory, and wholly exciting.' The Times

For fantasy fans everywhere this is the collected works of Tolkien's two best-loved classics. In The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is enlisted by the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves on their dangerous trip to the treasure-hoard of Smaug the dragon. In The Lord of the Rings the responsibility falls to Bilbo's nephew Frodo to stop the Dark Lord Sauron getting hold of the last Ring of Power. They have delighted generations, and are here presented in a wonderful gift set. (Kirkus UK) --Ce texte provient d'une édition qui n'est plus publiée ou qui est non diponible.

5.0étoiles sur 5 The Quintessential Fantasy, Mars 10 2007
Par Selena Elizabeth (Parry Sound, ON CANADA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
The quintessential fantasy story and absolutely essential reading for anyone interested in the fantastic genres, mythological sagas, epic adventure stories, or masterful literary works. I discovered Tolkien in high school. I had always known about the books, and had had them recommended to me several times, but never got around to reading them until Peter Jackson created his magnificent screen adaptation with THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING in 2001. The movie was so beautiful in every minute detail that I immediately sought out the novels, not difficult since my brother and father each owned the set, and read all three books of the trilogy. FELLOWSHIP remains my favourite, for the hauntingly beautiful descriptions of the mystical Elves of Lothlorien and their queen, Galadriel. It filled me with a sense of wonder and hope that remains quite difficult to explain. Tolkien was a master of the English language, and the words flow over the pages like poetry. In the end, THE LORD OF THE RINGS pulled me out of depression, and reminded me of the beauty of creation. I could go on about the beauty of the language, the details of the world of Middle Earth, the parallels to various mythological epics, Ad infinitum, but in the end THE LORD OF THE RINGS is a fantastic adventure epic full of heroes, magic, and glory, and what more could you really ask for?

5.0étoiles sur 5 Tolkien Rules!!!, Avril 13 2007
The fantasy realm of Middle-Earth created by J.R.R. Tolkien is a world with its own people, geography, languages and cultures. His writing has influenced the whole genre of fantasy writing and anyone even remotely into fantasy who hasn't read Tolkien, needs to read him. The logical place to start would be with THE HOBBIT, since THE LORD OF THE RINGS books pick up the story from there and a lot of the essential elements are introduced first in THE HOBBIT.

For those who has watched the Peter Jackson movie, reading the original books will give you a lot more detailed view of hobbits, elves, dwarves and men, since the movie is much more focused on the battle scenes through its adaptation and the books give a more balanced perspective.

You will find many memorable characters in Tolkien's writing and your imagination will be transported to a place where magic, courage and friendship are tested and characters engage in a epic battle of good and evil.
