Now this is a travelog I can sink my teeth into: informative, witty, delicious, colorful and above all else written by someone intent on having a good time while gadding about the US. The pictures are worth the price of the book alone. Fry, the consumate British comedian and happy wanderer, has a plan in writing this book. He wants so very much to include his readers in the fun of traveling the length and breadth of a country that supposedly knows no limits to its human opportunities. To that end, Fry seeks with the aid of an English taxi those unique and not so out-of-the-way places in the Union that contain people who have a curious story or two to share about their lives in one part of this vast multi-ethic society. Fry, with typical gusto and dare, seemingly tries every cultural experience the country has to offer, so that he can, as an inquisitive traveller, come away with an informed opinion as to its real aesthetic worth. After all, art really does imitate life. Fry's enormous appetite for the exotic, the zany, the dangerous, the curious, the exciting, and the novel makes him a delightful travel guide who obviously has plenty of money and time to indulge his every whim and fancy. When I finally reached the end of Fry's journey on the islands of Hawaii, I knew I had just completed the vicarious trip of a lifetime, without having to move outside the comforts of my recliner. Having said that, there is more than enough inspiration in this book to whet the appetites of those of us lesser mortals who yearn to actually experience the smallest of portions of the grand tour. Wonderful book to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace!
