Product Description

From Amazon.com

With The Fifth Mountain, Paulo Coelho turns his talent for spiritual fiction to the story of the Biblical prophet Elijah. Like a blossoming flower, Coelho opens up the brief account of Elijah's flight from Gilead and his time in Zarephath. He deepens the prophet's character by revealing the thoughts, doubts, and discoveries that Elijah must have experienced as he struggled to find his course in life amidst the confusion of war and political turmoil. When being a prophet of the God of the Israelites is like a warrant for your death, concerns about your chosen path are sure to arise. Perhaps it is this believability in Coelho's retelling that makes it so evocative, or it may be the bit of Old Testament wisdom he brings to popular literature of the 20th century: "the words of the lord are written in the world around us. Merely be attentive to what happens in your life, and you will discover where."

From Library Journal

This fascinating retelling of the biblical story of the prophet Elijah by Brazilian novelist Coelho is smoothly translated to read like a modern novel. The fleshed-out tale follows Elijah as he flees his homeland of Israel, where Jezebel, Phoenician wife of the king, had ordered the murder of all who reject the pagan god Baal, to Zarephath (Akbar). Elijah's spiritual crises continue after he is taken in by a widow and her son, following his direction from an angel, and ultimately falls in love with the widow. The movement of the novel comes from Elijah's introspective struggle with faith as he confronts his troubles, but the result is neither dull nor preachy and should find a niche among readers of popular fiction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple, inspiring read, Jun 21 2004
By "chezkelly" (Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fifth Mountain (Paperback)
Another quote which I like:

"It's always necessary to know when a stage of one's life has ended. If you stubbornly cling to it after the need has passed, you lose the joy and meaning of the rest."

A thoughtful book with a few inpiring quotes. A simple story to send the powerful messages. But I wish for a bit more depth and character development.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of his best, Mar 14 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Fifth Mountain (Paperback)
Paulo Coelho's book The Fifth Mountain will captivate your attention and warm your heart. It is probably my favorite of his books, along with By The River Piedra, I Sat Down and Wept. Coelho's simple yet hauntingly beautiful words will entice you to read all his other books. I've got two more books I have to read, The Pilgrimage and The Devil and Miss Prym. I can't wait until April 1st, when 11 Minutes is supposed to come out in the U.S. Let's hope for tons more from this author...I know I'll never get sick of him! The only thing that I don't like is the fact that I can't get some of his books available in English and that it took me forever to get a copy of The Devil and Miss Prym. That book, you can only get it used in the U.S., or if you're very lucky like I did, can find it new at a used book store...otherwise you have to order a new copy from the U.K., like I did to get the paperback.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Story, but not his best, Oct 21 2003
This review is from: Fifth Mountain (Paperback)
This book is great, but Coelho has better books out there. Personally, "Veronika Decides To Die" is my favorite of his works. He is very inspirational and his works are mostly quite powerful with powerful messages of following your dreams and obeying your calling. If you're a Coelho fan you'll pick up this book no matter what. If you are not, start small with "The Alchemist", an entertaining parable of a shepherd boy who follows his dream and how the universe conspired to bring him there. His books are very spiritual, so keep that in mind when browsing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the Coelho's best work, but a good one
I still firmly maintain that The Alchemist is the best work from Coelho. However, this book provides some intersting food for thought about the old testimate and christianity.
