Grade 7-10 Ames' new novel fails to live up to its title's promise of magic and mystery. Somehow the literary legerdemain doesn't quite work. The style doesn't soar, the characters are unsympathetic andalthough well intentioned and intelligentthe plot seems contrived. Fourteen-year-old Bernadette, unhappy in her family's new California home, turns to the occult to conjure up ways to return to Ohio. Three brutal murders ensue. Who's the killer?
