From Amazon.com

After stealing the hearts of middle-grade girls with her delightful Newbery Honor-winning Cinderella retelling, Ella Enchanted, Gail Carson Levine here creates a fairy tale of her own and gives it a characteristic grrrl-power twist. Twelve-year-old Addie admires her older sister Meryl, who aspires to rid the kingdom of Bamarre of gryphons, specters, and ogres. Addie, on the other hand, is fearful even of spiders and depends on Meryl for courage and protection. Waving her sword Bloodbiter, the older girl declaims in the garden from the heroic epic of Drualt to a thrilled audience of Addie, their governess, and the young sorcerer Rhys. But when Meryl falls ill with the dreaded Gray Death, Addie must gather her courage and set off alone on a quest to find the cure and save her beloved sister. Addie takes the seven-league boots and magic spyglass left to her by her mother and the enchanted tablecloth and cloak given to her by Rhys--along with a shy declaration of his love. She prevails in encounters with tricky specters (spiders too) and outwits a wickedly personable dragon in adventures touched with romance and a bittersweet ending. Young fans of princess stories will gobble this one up. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell

From Publishers Weekly

Levine (Ella Enchanted) enters a world of high fantasy with this latest princess tale, peopled with sorcerers, elves and fairies, but plot twists win out over character development. When teenage narrator Addie was two years old, and her sister, Meryl, just three, the siblings lost their mother to the Gray Death, a mysterious illness that continues to plague the kingdom of Bamarre, randomly selecting its victims. Meanwhile, under their monarch father's weak rule, "ogres, gryphons, specters and dragons... were slaughtering hundreds of Bamarrians every year." When the Gray Death strikes Meryl, Addie becomes determined to find the cure. Rhys, a sorcerer who fancies Addie, outfits her with a cloak ("It's not a cloak of invisibility," he tells her, "but if you're in shadow... you won't be noticed") and a tablecloth that produces food on demand; Bella, the girls' tutor, bequeaths to her gifts from their mother, seven-league boots ("the boots go seven leagues when you take a step") and a spyglass that can view a distance of seven leagues and also penetrate stone and wood. Despite Addie's myriad adventures (an encounter with a specter, an ogre and a dragon) and the courage she gains throughout, her character remains an enigma. Other subplots, such as Rhys and Addie's courtship, are not fully developed. Even after the heroine completes her mission (Levine plants clues to its outcome with a Beowulf-like poem interspersed throughout the novel), readers may feel let down. Ages 10-up.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Tale of bravery and honour, Juil 12 2004
Step follows step, hope follows courage ... The Two Princesses of Bamarre is an unusual tale of bravery and honour. The transformation and self discovery of Addie and the twist in the ending really left a mark in my heart.

Very encouraging story and may the tale of The Two Princesses live for ever.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre

Brave and adventurous, Addie goes on a quest to find a cure for her lovely sister who has caught the gray death and is dying very slowly every day! The two princesses of Bamarra are both very brave. One is named Addie and the other one is Meryl. Addie has brown wavy hair, and is afraid of spiders and the wild. The other one is Meryl who has golden hair and likes sword fighting and defeating monsters.
All of a sudden after a day of happiness, Meryl has the Gray Death, and she can only survive for eleven days. Addie has to find her courage and go on a dangerous quest to find the cure for the Gray Death. She will tell nobody about it. Once she leaves the castle gates, she steps out to danger. During her quest she will meet ogres, a dragon name Vollys, and specters. With obstacles in her way and tricky specters it will be hard to find the cure in time. Her time is running out and her sister’s life too. Bamarre depends on her to save Meryl. Will she make it?
The theme of this book is love and courage because Addie finds the courage to set out for the quest. Without courage, Addie will not be able to find the cure in time before her sister dies. This book is filled with love because without love, Addie would not even care if Meryl got the Grey death.
The rate I would give this book is ten out of ten because you can clearly understand what the book means. It also is very clear because while I was reading this book I can see little picture of what is happening in the book.
While Gail Carson was writing this book, I think he was thinking about a person named Joan Abelove. He said that, Joan Abelove gave him some ideas for this book, and he wants to thank Joan Abelove a million times. I think that Joan Abelove is a very special person to him because Gail Levine dedicated this book to him.
I really like this book because it is a fantasy, and I really like books that have quests in them because while I am reading the book, it is like I am going on a quest with the main character in the book. Try this book, this book is good. It will fill you with happiness and sorrow.

5.0étoiles sur 5 THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Juil 14 2004
Par Coco (CA, USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I love this book. Meryl and Addie are two princesses in the kingdom of Bamarre, a magical land full of dragons, spectors, ogres, sorcerers, and more. Meryl, the braver of the two sisters, has a dream to fight the evil creatures that are attacking Bamarreans until the land is safe. Addie, however, just wants to stay as far away from spiders as possible. That is, until Meryl gets the grey death. Nobody who has gotten the gray death has lived, and nobody will unless "cowards find courage and rain falls all over Bammare". Unfourtunately, Addie's cowardly father isn't much help, and it doesn't look like rain. So, while her sister is fighting the horrible grey death, Addie leaves the castle alone to find the cure for grey death. While on this great adventure, she conquers and ogre, fights gryphons, and gets past a dragon to save her sister. Time is running out, the grey death has left Meryl with only a few days left to live. With the help of a sorcerer names Rhys, some villagers, and a few fairies, this book has an amazing twist at the end. Everything about this book is perfect. (except maybe the binding on mine, but thats only because I read it so often and keep it with me on trips.) I love this book, and I know anybody in their right mind will too!
